- Am appalled by two thing in "Vatican Library" piece,
First - NO ONE wearing gloves or any protective garments in the presence of precious OLD documents.
As I understand it, from preservationists, oils & chemical in our hands can affect priceless documents. So - ????
Or were these all facsimilies & you did not convey that in the story.
Also - as a retired librarian - a collection of materials which is NOT cataloged - as you said - no one knows all the materials in the 'library'....
IS NOT A LIBRARY.
What makes a collection a 'library' is its ORGANIZATION!!

- I was dismayed to see every "authority" in the Vatican library handling all the documents with bare hands. Surely they should know enough to be wearing gloves. Also, maybe some of the artifacts should be sold and profits used to feed, clothe, and shelter the world's poor. WWJD??

- to whom it may involve:
the glimpse at rare vatican riches meant only for the pope was appalling.
shouldn't these things belong to the body of christ?
i grew up in a poor catholic family where birth control was a ticket to hell, suffering was offered up for the pagan babies in limbo, and nature, along with human joy was the ultimate sin.
as an adult, i now realize the church, for centuries, was just about power and greed over dumb suckers...........
no different from today's wall street.
i would like you to do a story on how the church obtained these treasures...............
and a second one on how/why the church let so many poor people suffer to support them and their hypocrisy.
thank you,

- In this story Mr. Safer said that "these 2000 year old manuscripts from Palestine". There was no Palestine 2000 years ago. The term "Palestine" was first used by the Turks in the late 1800's when they controlled the land. 2000 years ago there was only Judea and Israel.
Trying to change history to fit his political narrative is not journalism. I'm not a religious guy but I am a fair one. Mr. Safer should apologize on air. - Reply to this comment
- Would someone please explain why two "professionals" are handling these 16th century texts without gloves?!! This breaks all library protocol. Who's in charge there? Yikes!

- I cannot believe what I saw- all these old, priceless manuscripts being handled with BARE hands. Don't they know all the oils being transferred to these works?? Shame

- I wonder if the Vatican will ever release the other gospels besides the one published. Or the books writtern by female disciples. Yes, they did exist. The Holy Roman Catholic Church is such a rich, hypocriticial INSTITUTION. Now Catholic people themselves are good but the institution is something different. "This was made with real gold." Somewhere a kid's stomach is growling. Is the Catholic Church on some type of PR campaign or something with CBS. A few weeks ago they had a segment with Archbishop Dolan. Just sayin.
