- don, i kinda like the hybrid buyout thing in addition to the energy job creation. can see taing the 25b the automakers are asking for and telling them we will buy 25b worth of hybrids as soon as they ca manufacture them.

- Stat, article in WSJ that this year''s Harvard MBA''s are having trouble getting jobs as they were all focused on the financial industry and it is GONE.

And you believed it? while there may be a few, most of those folks come from privleged backgrounds and ma and pa aren''t gonna let them starve. If they have been away from ma & pa for long (as in voer 30) and didn''t ever consider they needed to stow away nuts for the day the market tanked, then a little manual labor will be good for their thought process. - Reply to this comment
- Strat, I do not think it would take them years if there was a BIG committed customer. Money speaks in my business. The world can be turned in short order for a customer with BIG bucks and this would be BIG bucks.

If only the US automakers actually manufactured a hybrid car worth anything. It will take them years to retool. - Reply to this comment
- Strat, on the Ivy guys looking for jobs....

- strat, I think there are many other options for spending billions of our dollars. One example,,,,,,
The US government buys all new hybrid cars for itself and the states from US manufacturers......
What do you get?
Costs about the same
Kicks green development into high gear
Gives a kick to the auto industry
Reduces government purchases of gasoline
Reduces future government energy costs
As I said, I suspect Obama''s infrastructure plan is just a placeholder. - Reply to this comment

And i expect they will all be selling insurance tomorrow. Seriously, people can not expec tto be guaranteed jobs in their narrow chosen field. I am in (as you may have surmised)IT and communications consulting. If my industry goes belly up tomorrow i have enough sales and marketing experience to go manage a copier sales team or (God forbid) sell them myself. you have to be able to translate your skills. It may not be what I want to do (I would rather do manual labor honestly, but I am getting a little old for it) but if it is what I have to do, so be it. - Reply to this comment
- Strat, I will give you the example of the Financial Industry.
Well educated with many holding Ivy MBA''s and many more in math (those were the dirivatives guys).
50,000 in NYC alone were layed off. 150,000 nationwide so far. Infrastructure does not meet their needs.
Infrastructure and 2.5M by 2011 makes for a nice sound bite but I suspect it is just a place holder. - Reply to this comment
- Infrastructure worked in the 30''''s because only 2% of America had a college education. Today, over 20% have a college education and many more have some college. They are not used to hard manual labor.

Well then you should know that a much smaller portion of infrastructure now is manual labor. modern technologies have made all of that work much easier. Yes, there is still a portio of any building project that requires someone actually touch and construct, but that is true no matter what industry you create. Computer manufacturers still have assembly workers. - Reply to this comment

- Strat, being an experienced engineer, I completely understand the design and project management portion.
America needs jobs but my point is the jobs need to be of a certain caliber or one of two things will happen:
1. Americans may not be willing to do them; or,
2. The bulk of the work will be done by a group that transits between here and Mexico depending on the work available.

Really? As if there is something wrong with getting paid by the hour? who is going to Engineer a light rail system, a wind farm or a solar energy plant? Now they may be hispanic as there are a lot of talented hispanic Engineers; but ther eis a difference between "Hispanic" and "illegal immigrant". which one is it you don;t like? - Reply to this comment
- well, I may want to do this consulting.. ahem... remotely. I don;t look good in plain colors or stripes.

- strat, most of the jobs in construction are hourly labor. For every one white collar there are about 20 blue collar or more.
In the SW (and Richardson''s state) most of the construction on infrastructure is done by Hispanics. - Reply to this comment
- ohhhh... and thus what you said about "officers" calling

Road and rail building, and alternative energy will create jobs at every level, from Management, to complex Engineering all the way to the laborer. I don;t know where you live but where I live the illegal immigrants were primarily in the home construction trade. since most infratructure is contracted out by the government there aren''t many contractors who get away w/ illegals on the payroll. - Reply to this comment

- strat, I hope Obama is successful even though i did not vote for him. I hope all US Presidents are successful.
However, this 2.5 million jobs by 2011 using infrastructure projects just does not seems like a well thought out. Lots of problems with that including the gap between creation of a project and actually starting work and JOBS.
In addition, most of the infrastructure work in America has been done by immigrants and illegal immigrants for many years. To get Americans to do that work would mean that unemployment would have to be stopped.
What we need are jobs Americans are willing to work.
Just my opinion. - Reply to this comment
