Made in USA: 10 great products still made here

American flag Flickr/DonkeyHotey
Are any good products still made in America?

Conventional wisdom says U.S. companies have shuttered their factories and moved manufacturing abroad for cheap labor. During the recession, 2 million manufacturing jobs vanished. Here's the story you don't hear: The United States is still the world's largest manufacturing economy, producing $1.6 trillion of goods each year, or 21 percent of global production. And that number may rise as more companies move back to the United States in search of lower costs and higher quality.

The United States will experience a manufacturing renaissance within the next five years, predicts the Boston Consulting Group. Increases in Chinese wages and shipping costs, as well as subpar manufacturing quality overseas, have already inspired some companies to consider "onshoring" or "reshoring" their production efforts back to the United States. And as U.S.-based industrial giants such as General Electric (GE) and Caterpillar (CAT) make the switch today, thousands of smaller companies continue to churn out best-in-class products across the country. We're celebrating 10 American companies making signature consumer products with American ingenuity - and leaving foreign-made competitions in the dust.

For over six years, I've offered all made in USA inventory (90% made in New Mexico, USA) at my retail shop in Truth or Consequences, NM and online, and I'm having to close the shop by Christmas. I stocked items from more than 80 southwest USA vendors in the hope that Americans would start to actually seek out American-made merchandise, but it just didn't happen enough to be a profitable venture. From specialty foods to jewelry to home decor and bath & beauty products, all were high-quality small-batch goods at competitive pricing. After Christmas, I'll focus more on the new-mexico-online.com site, but I've been extremely disappointed in the response. Not enough Americans care enough to look for Made in USA items instead of just shopping at a big box store like Wal-Mart or Land's End.

There are indeed still lots of great products made here in the USA.
what is often a bit frustrating (from a marketing standpoint) is those companies that make very little in the USA and try to pass themselves off as an American Brand/ Company. (a particular company from Maine comes to mind).

That being said...Boston Based M. Miller is a family owned, privately held, domestic manufacturer of Skiwear and Outerwear.
www.mmillerfur.com M. Miller is a Global Luxury brand with both a domestic and international distribution.

Here at Almost Heaven we've been selling wooden hot tubs, saunas and ionizers - all proudly made in America and shipped to over 70 countries around the world for nearly 3 decades. It's not just important for Americans to buy American, but also for American companies to export quality American products to the rest of the world.

I would liked to have supported one of these companies, but according to the specifications on the shoes that I looked at on Allen Edmonds' site, the shoes are made in the Dominican Republic. While that's "made in America," it's not "Made in USA."

Our company, Quantum Medical Imaging designs, manufactures and ships all over the world a line of X-Ray medical imaging generators and everything else that goes into an X-Ray room. All from beautiful downtown Long Island, New York. We're the biggest manufacturer of this in the US.

Harley-Davidson makes overpriced, crappy bikes based on 1930s technology, which don't accelerate, stop or handle well and most models weigh in excess of 700 pounds. Tesla has no history to speak of, is not remotely profitable and is fully funded by the U.S. taxpayers. http://www.dailyfinance.com/2009/09/15/tesla-motors-gets-a-465-million-taxpayer-loan-why/

Harley makes a decent bike but don't they have anyone on their staff that knows how to design a real muffler. The obnoxious roar of this machine does not bring to mind pleasant thoughts to most people. They just wish that jerk will leave town quickly. A Honda Goldwing by comparison is a sweet pleasant machine that does't irritate folks.Harley should offer a more civil machine. It would help build a better image.
