Specialized Globe Daily 1 - $550

Specialized Globe Daily 1

Specialized Globe Daily 1

/ Mitch Mandel/Bicycling Magazine

The Daily 1, a city bicycle designed by Specialized Bicycle Components' subsidiary Globe, is built for commuting with style and speed. Though its full fenders and silver bell may suggest a sluggish commuter bike, Bicycling magazine says this lightweight aluminum bicycle's exceptionally large tires and silver caliper brakes offer nimble steering and highly effective speed control, especially on descents. Plus, the Daily 1's basket has enough room for a chihuahua. Or more practical applications.

Looking at the bicycles shown here tells me the author has a lot to learn about bicycles and commuting. Splash guards are better than fenders both for protection and maintenance. Also non of the units show have full chain guards. Finally too little carrying capability.
These units look more suited to a casual ride on the local bike path than serious commuting in traffic.

Whaaa?! Where's Surly in this list? Name says it all.

My preference when relocating to a new city is locating an old steel framed three speed, like a Raleigh w/a Sturmey Archer Hub, so I can sherpa a massive load in my HUGE Basil Dutch panniers; panniers that you can't find here in the USA. And if you are lucky enough to score a used bicycle, don't pass up on any of the Dutch brands like a Gazelle or Batavus--these bicycles were designed to haul your 'living room.'
