CBS News

Politics by nature promise a respectable showing of memorable moments, from candidate candids to mesmerizing memes. But in an election year -- with debates, posturing and gaggles of reporters documenting each passing moment -- we're especially likely to see sensations that draw hundreds of thousands of people to the Internet and other new media to gawk at missteps and critical turning points.

Here, in chronological order, are nine of the most viral political moments of 2012.

TomR1934 says:
Happy New Year! Now, insist that #CONGRESS pass simple bills and #POTUS make simple directives, to restore OPPORTUNITY to ALL and return the wealth and political power garnered by the wealth oligarchy (Fabian Socialists) to our USA citizenry:

#Congress:
o Tax ALL income over $2-mi; and estates over $20-mil at 90%;
o Cut military spending by 33%;
o Require every congressman to publicly list worthwhile cuts to spending;
o Extend Medicare to all citizens replacing Obamacare;
o Borrow not, except for worthwhile infrastructure.
o No budget on time, no pay. No pensions, only 401K plans. Medicare medical only. No "specials".

#POTUS:
o Direct Treasury to pay pittance on non-pension debts to balance budget (yes, it's constitutional);
o Direct staff to publicly list worthwhile cuts to spending.

Lets Go USA! Be careful who you vote into office!

The journalism here is so wimpy, refusing to stand up for actual facts. For instance:

1) Rather than saying "Obama's quote was taken out of context", it says "Obama challenged that his quote was taken out of context", writing as though fact is just Obama's opinion.

2) On the "Legitimate Rape" slide, the journalist fails to mention that Akin's position has absolutely no basis in fact whatsoever. It is made up. History is full of instances of generations of children born after conquerers "rape and pillagee". If Akin's fantasy had any merit, that just wouldn't happen.

Comparing fantasy and fact as if they are just two opinions is the weakest form of journalism. Have some spine, CBS.

I totally agree blue on Akin. In fact, if this may have been the turning point not only for the Senate but also made a lasting impression of the TEA Party and the GOP. This was also followed up by Mourdock in the Indiana Senate race that also solidified that viewpoint.

If Akin had not put his foot in his mouth then the GOP possibly could have taken the Senate and possibly the White House. (although the rest of the GOP had their contributions)

You'r right! This is another example of the new crop of "reporters". They won't state the facts for fear of offending / alienating someone and just HAVE to share the blame between both parties when one party is filibustering everything in sight, etc. The internet isn't the only reason papers are going the way of the dodo bird, it's this new, slipshod "reporting".
