Oscar nominations to be announced Thursday morning

(CBS News) Nominations for the 85th Academy Awards will be announced early Thursday morning -- which means a number of stars and other Hollywood heavyweights could get a wake-up call with some very good news.

The names of the films, actors, directors, screenwriters and others up for Oscar statuettes will be read starting at 8:30 a.m. ET (5:30 a.m. PT) from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science's Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills, Calif. CBSNews.com will webcast the announcement.

Academy Awards host Seth MacFarlane and actress Emma Stone will announce the nominees. MacFarlane is only the second Oscars host to participate in the nominees announcement -- the first was Charlton Heston in 1972.

As many as 10 films could receive the coveted nomination for best picture (there could end up being less than 10 -- it depends on how many films get No. 1 votes from Academy members).

"Zero Dark Thirty," "Les Miserables," "Lincoln," "Argo," "Life of Pi" and "Silver Linings Playbook" are widely considered to become best picture contenders. Other potential nominees could include "Django Unchained," "Beasts of the Southern Wild," "Amour" and "Moonrise Kingdom."
