Tony Scott dead: Apparent suicide note found

(CBS News) An apparent suicide note was found by Los Angeles County investigators at Tony Scott's office, after the movie director took his own life Sunday. The contents of that letter have not been revealed.

It was a sudden, surprising end for a director who had worked in Hollywood for 30 years. Scott left his mark with a wide range of hits, including "Top Gun," "Crimson Tide" and "True Romance."

The British-born director parked his car near the Vincent Thomas Bridge, in Los Angeles, then walked on to the bridge and jumped into the harbor without hesitation, according to witnesses Sunday.

Scott made a career working with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, such as Denzel Washington, Gene Hackman and with his equally famous brother, Ridley Scott, director of "Alien" and "Gladiator." The Scott brothers ran the production company, Scott Free Productions, responsible for hits in both film and TV, including the CBS dramas "Num3ers" and "The Good Wife."

Wearing his signature red cap, Scott discussed the film-making process with "CBS This Morning" co-host Charlie Rose on his show in 2004, while promoting the film "Man on Fire."

"I like all parts of the process," Scott said. "There is nothing more frightening than actually making a movie and there is nothing more satisfying than the days you`re on the set."

Scott was 68 years old. He is survived by his wife, Donna and their twin sons.

Los Angeles investigators recovered Scott's body Sunday afternoon.
