Trace Adkins on Memorial Day and honoring troops

(CBS News) Country music star Trace Adkins is deeply committed to honoring Americans who serve this country.

"I believe that Memorial Day should be the most reverent day of the year for us as Americans," he recently told CBS News special correspondent Jeff Glor.

"I think it's taken very seriously by the people that recognize it," Adkins said. And then there are some people that it's just another day off from work. You know, that's too bad."

After selling ten million albums, and the crossover hit "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk," Adkins decided to start playing mostly smaller shows, like the one that kicked off Fleet Week in New York recently. He's looking for a more personal connection with the audience.

His unique blend of humor, hit making and hardy living makes Adkins a hero to his fans - especially those who serve.

"If you have the chance and you have an opportunity to spend time...with bona fide heroes, why would-- why would you not want to do that," Adkins asked. "And when I get the opportunity to do it, all I can do is-- I hope some of 'em maybe it'll rub off on me."

The feeling appears to be mutual. "I know I always come back with a full heart, you know? And I feel proud," Adkins said. "They restore your faith in humanity."

Adkins said "people party" when he does "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk." Adkins said the origins for the song stem from "...three drunk songwriters watching a big woman knock people around on the dance floor."
