Ann Romney speaks out on her miscarriage trauma

(CBS News) Ann Romney is set to speak at the Republican National Convention on Tuesday night and many say she plans to share personal details to help voters relate to her husband, Gov. Mitt Romney. But before joining her husband at the convention in Tampa, Fla., Ann Romney shared personal -- and wrenching -- details about her own struggles in an interview with "CBS Evening News" anchor Scott Pelley. Mrs. Romney even shared details that were new to her own husband, speaking out publicly for the first time about her multiple miscarriages.

While it has been previously reported that Mrs. Romney suffered one miscarriage, she opened up about the last of several miscarriages and the impact it had on the Romneys' youngest son, Craig.

In a portion of the interview that aired Tuesday morning on "CBS This Morning," Ann Romney described the unexpected joy of becoming pregnant in her mid-40s only to ultimately miscarry.

"I knew I was losing the baby," she said, describing the episode.  "I waited until it was about six in the morning and said, 'Mitt, you've got to take me to the hospital right now."

Craig, she explained, was particularly excited for a new younger brother and "the poor youngest son, not having spoken with me or anything, goes to school, is just crestfallen ... knowing that ... we've lost this baby ... he walked in the door ... and he fell on the floor and just burst into tears."

Sitting beside her during the interview, Mitt Romney admitted, "I hadn't heard the story about Craig coming home from school that day ... I'm not surprised. He's a very tender heart."
