Ex-Navy SEAL pens account of bin Laden raid

(CBS News) A new book, due out September 11, by a former Navy SEAL will detail the raid last year that killed Osama bin Laden, one of the world's most wanted terrorists.

While much has been reported about the raid including the crash of one of the Blackhawk helicopters used in the assault and Bin Laden's final moments, the book marks the first time someone who was there has revealed details of the operation.

"No Easy Day: The firsthand Account of the Mission that Killed Osama Bin Laden," will be published by Dutton and is written by an author using the fictitious name Mark Owen.

The names of the SEALs have been changed to protect their identities. CBS News has learned Owen did not get his manuscript approved by the Pentagon, CIA or the White House.

The publisher says the book has been cleared by a former special operations attorney.

"He vetted it for tactical, technical and procedural information as well as information that could be considered classified ...and found it to be without risk to national security,"

While the mission is widely seen as one of President Obama's greatest foreign policy successes, the release of the book in the middle of President Obama's re-election campaign potentially could impact the election.

A group of former special operations officers has already accused the President of revealing sensitive information about the mission and politicizing it for the campaign.

And conservative groups are also angry about an upcoming movie "Zero Dark Thirty." That film about the bin Laden raid was rumored reported to be set for an October release. Now, unlike the new book, it will be appear after the election.
