Umpire fooled by Yankees foul ball "catch"
NEW YORK, NY - JUNE 26: Dewayne Wise #45 of the New York Yankees falls into the stands after making a catch off the bat of Jack Hannahan #9 of the Cleveland Indians in the seventh-inning at Yankee Stadium on June 26, 2012 in the Bronx borough of New York City. (CBS News/AP) At Yankee Stadium Tuesday night, Yankees' left fielder Dewayne Wise appeared to make a spectacular catch of a foul ball, which carried him into the seats.
Umpire Mike DiMuro called Cleveland Indians batter Jack Hannahan "out" - but Wise actually dropped the ball as he fell over the wall, and kept his glove closed.
On the replay, a fan in the stands can be seen holding the ball.
"What was I supposed to do run back to left field?" Wise said. "I saw him looking at my glove so I just got up, put my head down and ran off the field."
Wise knew he never had the ball when he went over the low wall down the left field line with two outs and a runner on third base in the seventh inning.
DiMuro didn't realize the ball hit off Wise's glove and fell for a souvenir until he saw a replay after the game.
"I went out on the ball and saw the ball into his glove in the stands. He disappeared into the stands and I believed that the ball was in his glove," DiMuro said. "In hindsight, I should have asked him to show me the ball since he fell into the stands and out of my line of vision."
Hannahan was so angry that he ran out to argue the call. He ended up getting thrown out of the game.
The Yankees went on to win 6-4.
