Michigan Democrats blast Romney opinion article
DETROIT — Former Gov. Jennifer Granholm, two Michigan congressmen and the state's Democratic Party chairman criticized Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney Tuesday for a newspaper opinion piece in which he claimed to be a "son of Detroit."
Romney's article ran Tuesday in The Detroit News. The ex-Massachusetts governor and presumed front-runner to take on President Barack Obama also released a campaign ad Tuesday touting his city roots and Michigan heritage.
The article and ad blasted Obama for extending federal bailouts to then-floundering Chrysler and General Motors. Romney also criticized the car companies and unions.
In a 2008 New York Times opinion article, he called for a "managed bankruptcy" instead of auto bailouts. The article was titled: "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt."
"He opposed the rescue package for the automakers ... with no regard of the families," Granholm said. "Mitt Romney turned his back on Michigan. I would say he stabbed us in the back during our darkest hour and we're not going to forget."
Granholm was joined Tuesday by U.S. Reps. John Dingell and Sander Levin, and Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer on a conference call with reporters.
Romney was born in Detroit and raised in the city and later in an upscale suburb.
Michigan holds its Republican presidential primary Feb. 28. A poll released Monday by Public Policy Polling showed former Pennsylvania Gov. Rick Santorum at 39 percent and Romney at 24 percent in Michigan.

- George Romney is rolling over in his grave watching his son pander to the religious whackos and the radical anti-union conservatives. A despicable flip-flopper.
