10 Best and Worst States for Student Loan Debt
(MoneyWatch) If you attend a college in the Northeast, chances are you're going to graduate with higher student loan
debt.
Seven of the 10 states which produce graduates with the worst student debt are located on the East Coast, according to a new survey by the Project on Student Debt.
On the flip side, students who graduate from colleges in the West manage to earn bachelor degrees with the lowest student loan debt.
Why do students in the Northeast rack up the most education loans? Students in these states are more likely to attend private colleges and even the state schools in this region are pricier. Out West, students overwhelmingly prefer state universities and the tuition at these public institutions is below the national average.
About two-thirds of students across the country graduate with debt averaging $23,200, which is up six percent since the last survey was conducted four years ago.
