Travel Roundup: Delta Spends $819K Lobbying, Scientists' Green Travel, Kayak's Travel Survey and More

Delta Air Lines spent $819,000 lobbying in first part of 2009 -- Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines Inc. spent $819,566 in the first three months of 2009 lobbying Congress on airline passenger issues and international alliances between carriers. The airline's total included Northwest Airlines. In the last three months of 2008, Delta spent $610,000 to lobby the government, while Northwest spent more than $1.4 million. Scientists tell how to travel green -- The Union of Concerned Scientists came up with ways to travel more green. For singles or couple on trips of 500 miles or more, it's greener to fly nonstop than drive. Traveling by bus rather than car, a couple will cut carbon emissions by 55 to 75 percent, and traveling by train is still greener than driving. The group also came up with some controversial ideas, such as flying planes with a first-class section is less green than traveling on an all-coach flight. [Source: Associated Press]

Kayak says travelers still traveling -- A survey of 4,100 sponsored by Kayak.com says that 95 percent said they planned to take a trip this summer. Around 41 percent said the recession didn't affect their plans at all. However, 64 percent said they would avoid flying because it was too expensive. [Source: Pacific Business News]

Daytona Beach hotel robbed -- A Daytona Beach, Fla. beachside hotel was robbed by two men early Sunday morning, according to police reports. Two suspects entered the front door and approached the front desk at the Nautilus Inn at 1:08 a.m. Sunday, showing a handgun and announcing it was a robbery.
