Should you upgrade to iOS 6 today?

(MoneyWatch) Today's the day: Apple's (AAPL) latest mobile operating system, iOS 6, is available for your existing iPhones and iPads. (If you want iOS 6 wrapped in a shiny new iPhone 5, you'll still have to wait until September 21.)

But what exactly is under the hood? Is iOS 6 worth the time and trouble (no cost; it's free) to install if you don't have a faster processor and larger screen to take advantage of the flashier features? Here's a roundup of all the most interesting stuff Apple packed into the new iPhone operating system -- read it and then decide for yourself:

New maps. Perhaps the biggest news is that Apple has implemented its own mapping software and given Google Maps the boot. Industry competition aside, this is a pretty nice deal for iPhone users, since Apple's map app includes free turn-by-turn driving directions -- a first for the iPhone. That said, Apple's maps aren't as polished as Google's (GOOG) offerings, with the search giant having about a decade head start in this arena.

Phone enhancements. The iPhone is, first and foremost, a phone. Or at least, that's what it's supposed to be. Apple has made some fundamental improvements to the phone features for the first time in years. Now there's a "do not disturb" mode in which you can tell take your iPhone "off the hook" for set periods of time. But you can designate certain "VIPs" who can still get through, allowing you to temporarily keep the world at bay while remaining accessible for the most important calls. There's also an option to reply to people via text right from within the phone app.

Email upgrades. Likewise, I'm very excited about the VIP treatment you can give to certain email contacts, whose messages bubble to the top of a new inbox.

Panorama mode. Your camera can now automatically build a panoramic photo when you pan the phone from one side of a scene to the other. Apparently, no more need for those panoramic stitching apps.

Those are the highlights, but there are other improvements as well. Apple's voice-activated virtual assistant, Siri, is now smarter, with the ability to make OpenTable reservations, for example. And if you enjoy jerky, low-res FaceTime, you can now do that over cellular rather than just Wi-Fi.

Want to get the update? Just open iTunes on your PC, plug in your iPhone, and choose "Help, Check for Updates."

I downloaded the IOS upgrade 36 hours ago and my iPhone 4 has been locked ever since!! I let the battery run out and recharged it, still locked. I have popped the chip out, still locked, it won't let me shut it off or do anything, the apple icon keeps appearing on the screen and a message to slide to continue upgrade but when you slide the screen goes blank! Crap, crap, crap!!

I disagree with the author regarding Facetime as I have used it prior to the IOS6 update on WiFi and 3G and it has been much better than skype.
The only issues I had was the inability of 3-way calling.

I know a couple of people for whom iOS6 was a terrible idea. The upgrade installed on their phone, obliterated their operating systems, and bricked their phone. The response from the Apple store? "It happens. Here have a replacement phone with iOS6 already installed." The sales rep then tossed a $500+ phone in a box with 50 other iPhone 4s that didn't survice the update.

People might want to wait until they aren't beta testing Apple's latest mess.

I have a firm and solid personal policy: If what I am using does what I want it to and does not screw up (or need endless security updates), I stick with it until I am forced to update. I even refuse to touch - far less install - ANY Microsoft product until the millions of bug-testers (read: paying customers) have sorted out the bugs for Bill's Gang Of Thousands.

IMHO there is too much time wasted by people - who I am sure mean well - scrambling to constantly update, update, update. Stop playing the game and take back your sanity, time and independence.

Now that Jobs is gone, the new MBA suits at Apple are playing the same STUPID game as everyone else... incremental features added to devices every few months, so a new round of devices to buy and thousands of dollars to spend just because there's a new model.

I'm not a Luddite, I do use technology. But I refuse to hand over all of my hard-earned cash (and all of my spare time) just so idiot MBA suits can get rich and think up new ways to separate me from my money.

I upgraded this morning and Apple still hasn't been able to correct my problem, which is the Recents Phone Log....after the last upgrade, it stopped cataloging my incoming and outgoing calls. Very frustrating....no help from Apple Customer Support either.
