Android News: Angry Birds, Audible, and GasBuddy
(MoneyWatch)
It's a good day to be the owner of an Android phone! I've got three new apps for you to grab before heading out for your holiday weekend -- one designed to entertain, one to enrich, and one to, um, help you find cheap gas.
Angry Birds For months, Angry Birds has been the top-selling iPhone app. (Not game, mind you, but app.) For a long time I couldn't understand all the fuss -- and then I played it. It's cute, silly, and insanely addictive. (Warning: your productivity will suffer.) You wouldn't think a game about flinging birds at walled-in pigs would be all that, but it is. Even the promo video (below) doesn't do it justice.
Audible Arguably the single best way to listen to audiobooks on the go, Audible offers a gazillion titles, reasonable subscription and a-la-carte rates, and a spiffy new Android app. With it you can download titles from your Audible library, read about upcoming author chats and releases, quickly jump to specific chapters and bookmarks, and so on.
Gas Buddy Saving a nickel or dime per gallon of gas may not seem like much, but it adds up over time. Gas Buddy (which, unlike its $2.99 iPhone counterpart, is free) shows you which nearby stations have the lowest prices (and provides maps if you don't know the area), so you can pocket that extra change every time you fill up. (This app works best for those who live in densely populated areas -- and drive a lot.)
