(Episode 521; 14 minutes 52) You probably spend an inordinate amount of time on email, messaging, texting and, perhaps, tweeting. You are, no doubt, always contactable and find yourself working at strange hours of the day and night.

Dalton Conley, Dean for the Social Sciences at New York University, says we're really engaging in "weisure" --- a cross between work and leisure that is consuming more and more of our time. He explores it in his new book "Elsewhere USA: How We Got From the Company Man, Family Dinners and the Affluent Society to the Home Office, Blackberry Moms and Economic Anxiety."

Economic anxiety seems to be the key here. Are we working more because we feel that we have to if we want to keep our jobs and maintain those hefty payments on our overstretched mortgages? In that case, the rat race is alive and well, it's just got a little faster.
