Labor Department: No delay for employment report

WASHINGTON A Labor Department official tells CBS News correspondent Bob Fuss there should be no delay in the release of the monthly employment report. It's expected to be released this Friday at 8:30 a.m. ET.

The closely watched report is the final snapshot of employment before the Nov. 6 presidential election.

There had been some speculation the report would be delayed as a result of Superstorm Sandy. Preparation for the jobs report typically ramps up in the week of the release. The federal government was closed Monday and Tuesday due to the storm.

On Monday the Labor Department had issued a statement saying, "It is our intention that Friday will be business as usual regarding the October Employment Situation report."

The last report, released on Oct. 5, showed that the economy had added 114,000 in September and that the unemployment rate had dropped to 7.8 percent.

With all the discussion surrounding how unemployment statistics are collected and counted, it's amazing that such a variable, disputed figure holds so much weight in the political arena. The general trend of economic improvement seems to be holding (and is reflected increases in hiring/job listings on sites like www.Granted.com. But how much that growth is reflected in the unemployment figures depends on who you're talking to.

No doubt the candidates on both sides are holding their breaths on this one.

JOBS:

LIE "I'll create 12 million jobs:" It now stands exposed as a complete fraud by Glenn Kessler, the Washington Post fact-checker, who pinned upon it his highest prize of four "Pinocchios" for Romney.

LIE, unemployment, Obama's fault. We won't reach Full Employment till Europe, 1st trade partner, recovers. Unemployment 2009: 10%. 2012: 7.8%.

What a load a s**t I read here in these forums. A bunch of government employees - not political appointees - work hard to produce these reports month after month, year after year, regardless of who's president, and you 'cons disgustingly show no respect for them (as you usually do - show no respect for anyone other than yourselves). You don't know a d**n thing how these things work, yet you mouth off about how its all "fixed" somehow. Your hatred of Obama has actually become a mental disease with you 'cons.

Lets make sure this report has the full data from all states. California's unemployment numbers cannot be conveniently 'missing' like last time.
