Disney's New Revenue Stream: Eggs

By
Catharine P. Taylor
(MoneyWatch)  Hey, media exec! Lack of a viable business model got you down? Well, the solution may be right in your refrigerator!

Maybe, like the Walt Disney Corp., you can start selling eggs stamped with your corporate logo, or the image of the cutest character in your stable. Just imagine SpongeBob eggs, or New York Times eggs (with, maybe, a special limited edition featuring Pinch's face), or ... yes ... "CBS Evening News with Katie Couric" eggs! Eureka! Media industry's problems solved!

OK, enough of the pre-weekend silliness, but Disney really is selling eggs with Disney characters stamped onto their shells, in TV commercials, and not just on Disney-owned media properties. I saw the commercial I'm linking to here on the Today Show yesterday, though couldn't find a mold online quite like the one seen in the ad that shows someone making a fried egg in the shape of Mickey Mouse's head. Amazingly, this completely run-of-the-mill ad has 68,000 views on YouTube. Too many people with way too much time on their hands, I'd guess. Maybe some of them are Disney employees who've been laid off recently, and, ever since, have been secretly fantasizing about cracking open Mickey's head.
