UAE Continues Military Investment

By
Matthew Potter
(MoneyWatch)  The UAE announced details of another contract awarded at the recent Defense Exposition. On top of buying C-130J and C-17 aircraft as already reported the Emirates is investing in two maritime patrol aircraft from Canada. The National reported on 22 March that a $290 million contract was signed with Provincial Aerospace to deliver two modified Bombardier Dash-8 aircraft. The UAE already operates two Dash-8 aircraft and these will also require upgrading. The UAE will utilize the new aircraft for coastal patrol and interdiction missions aimed at stopping smuggling as well as more traditional surveillance missions. Provincial Aerospace has a long history of modifying aircraft for these types of missions and the work will most likely be performed in Newfoundland. The UAE has invested millions in aircraft and missile systems in the last few years as it has significantly upgraded its capabilities.
