Canadian Government Plans To Use Military Spending To Stimulate Their Economy
(MoneyWatch) The Canadian government has been criticized for not supporting domestic industries with recent defense investments. In a counter to this they recently awarded two large command and control contracts to Canadian employers. They are also using planned investments in their military bases infrastructure to show they believe in Canada's companies as well as to provide some stimulus to the economy. The Canadian Press writes that four major contracts will be executed to upgrade the base at Esquimalt in the West alone. These alone will spend $266 million Canadian. Further contracts are expected to be announced at bases across the country. It may be that these were planned investments and the government is trying to get credit for not only buying from domestic employers but also providing stimulus in a time of economic uncertainty.
