Halliburton and KBR Agree to Fines for Nigerian Bribery

(MoneyWatch)  We wrote in December about Siemens' settlement with the EU and the U.S. for bribery related to foreign government's contracts. Now The Washington Post reports that Halliburton and its former subsidiary KBR have agreed to record fines from the U.S. government related to bribes paid to Nigerian officials for construction contracts. The company paid over $180 million in bribes for about $6 billion in contracts. The fine is a record $579 million with $559 million to be paid by Haliburton. Siemens paid the U.S. and the German government over $1.4 billion in fines related to their cases in South America and Asia. U.S. law makes it illegal for an American corporation to pay bribes to foreign governments.
