Homeland Security Sued Over E-Verify Requirement

(MoneyWatch)  Back in November we wrote how the Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) had been modified by Executive Order to begin requiring Federal contractors to use the E-Verify system to prove their workers were in the U.S. legally. Now according to Federal Computer Weekly a variety of business and human rights group have sued in Federal court to prevent the implementation of this rule. While their motivation is to protect the companies and workers from what could be possible abuses of this system, they are suing under the idea that the law establishing E-Verify as a pilot program does not allow its use as directed by the President. It will have to be seen how far this case will get, or how the courts rule, but this is an issue as the E-Verify is not required to be used by companies through Congressional passed laws.
