Media Roundup: New iPhone Likely to be Announced Today, Boston Globe to Vote on Cuts Today and More
(MoneyWatch) New iPhone likely to be announced today -- At its World Wide Developers Conference in San Fransisco, Apple is expected to reveal the latest version of its popular iPhone smart phone. Most analysts suspect that the phone will get a bump in storage capacity and a few hardware upgrades such as a front facing camera. The phone's third version of firmware is also expected to be released sometime this month. Some rumors suspect that Apple will offer a cheaper, $99 version of the phone. Apple is also expected to announce an update to its OS X computer operating system. [Source: Gizmodo]
Boston Globe to vote on cuts today -- After months of debate, both internally and with its parent company The New York Times, The Boston Globe's largest union is set to vote on proposed cuts today. The New York Times has threatened to close the Boston paper if it does not cut $20 million. The proposal, being voted on today, offers a 8.4 percent cut. Many reports have surfaced suggesting that the union, representing the newsroom and advertising employees among others, will vote no. The Times has threatened to cut pay by 23 percent if the union fails to approve the proposal. [Source: The New York Times]
ESPN Magazine puts up the paywall -- The sports cable network ESPN has announced it will shut down espnthemag.com and fold the content behind its "Insider" service on espn.com. The company's "Insider" feature has long been a staple of the site, putting premium content behind a paywall. Those paying for a magazine subscription already have an Insider account. Most content on ESPN's Web site is, and will remain, free as the magazine is responsible for less than 10 percent of the site's content. Previously, any user could access the magazine's content for free. [Source: BusinessWeek]
Zell may be out at the Tribune -- As the Chicago-based Tribune company reorganizes after declaring bankruptcy last year, owner Sam Zell may be forced to relinquish control of the company to a group of bakers and investors. The often foul-mouthed real estate billionaire has been a controversial figure since purchasing the Tribune company in 2007. While still being negotiated, the deal would involve a debt-for-equity swap that would give lenders a management role in the reorganized company. [Source: Chicago Tribune]
True/Slant set to launch -- AOL's new news site, True/Slant, is officially launching in public beta today. The news site relies on a model that allows journalists to take "ownership" of their content receiving a portion of the revenue. Thus far, the site has over 100 contributors, including former CNN anchors and Rolling Stone writers. The site's aim is to allow writers to be their own brand where they market their own content while engaging with readers. Last week, AOL was officially spun off from its former parent company, Time Warner. [Source: MediaWeek]
