MeeHive/Kosmix Has Got The Buzz
I wonder how many entrepreneurs, searching for a brand name for their companies the past few years, have considered some form of the word "hive." My guess is a lot, maybe as many as have considered "buzz." In addition to being the highest level of organization in the Windows Registry, hive conjures up exactly the kind social, interactive, community that virtually every startup is seeking to establish.
Comes now MeeHive, which bills itself as "your personal newspaper that brings you the latest about what's happening in your world... Here's how it works: List the topics and issues you're passionate about, and then MeeHive will scour thousands of news outlets and millions of blogs to find stories about your interests. You can share articles with others, see what friends read, and even use your iPhone to get MeeHive on-the-go. It's your news, your way."
MeeHive utilizes the universal search engine Kosmix, which optimizes the Web by topic, presenting a selection of relevent videos, photos, news, and links to related topics. Kosmix's categorization engine yields magazine-style topic pages for user-controlled navigation.
There are many competitors in the space where MeeHive/Kosmix are operating, but none that work better than these do in quickly aggregating blog posts, tweets, news headlines, wikipedia entries, videos from Truveo and YouTube, 'specially around a name (try Johnny Cash), or a company (GM).
It works particularly well on mobile, too, so this is one hive that should be buzzing itself into a pretty bright future.
