McDonald's Fires Manager Over Anti-Gay Words Against Trans Teen

(MoneyWatch)  An Orlando McDonald's (MCD) has fired one of its managers after he told a 17-year-old job applicant (via voice mail), "You will not get hired. We do not hire faggots."

The manager didn't even get his terminology right -- "faggot" is a hateful term for a male homosexual, whereas the applicant he was addressing was, in fact, a transgender woman -- i.e. she feels psychologically female and has been living as a woman for six years but she was born with a male body.

Unlike many states, Florida's employment nondiscrimination laws include gender identity as well as sexual orientation, so the applicant was able to file a complaint against the McDonald's.

The restaurant disassociated itself from the manager in a statement:

The behavior of the individual in question is not reflective of the employment policies in the organization. Further, this individual acted outside the scope of his authority and was not responsible for hiring. The individual in question is no longer employed by the restaurant.

In 2008, after employees at a Kentucky McDonald's harassed two gay customers, the company wound up having to pay out $2,000 and initiate diversity training for local employees. Too bad the Orlando manager never got the memo.
