Michele Bachmann to end presidential campaign

Republican presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann will announce that she's ending her presidential campaign after a dismal showing in the Iowa caucuses, according to an adviser to the congresswoman.

Earlier, a senior Republican official familiar with the congresswoman's plans told CBS News partner National Journal that Bachmann came to the decision to end her run, recognizing that "there was no viable way forward."

Also, Bachmann canceled her campaign trip to South Carolina.

Campaign manager Keith Nahigian tells The Associated Press that the Minnesota congresswoman plans a news conference in Iowa later Wednesday morning. Nahigian would not say whether Bachmann intends to drop out.

Bachmann, 55, told a small group of supporters Tuesday night that she was staying in the presidential race - despite her sixth place finish - as the only true conservative who can defeat President Obama. But her campaign is known to be low on money.

Bachmann's showing was a sharp turn after she finished in first place in the Iowa GOP's summer straw poll.

What is amazing to me is the disconnect the media creates between her Iowa Straw Poll "victory" and her dismal showing in the caucus. She won the Iowa Straw Poll by literally buying votes. Luckily she is not able to do the same in the primaries. Two down, five to go.

Good... anyone that's wants to cut veterans benefits for wounded soldiers returning from war shouldn't hold the presidency .....much less political office.

It was nice to see Bachmann's family on stage last night. At least her family believed in her. Everyone in America knew that she was out to lunch from day one. She better get her act together now in her home riding as the Democrats are going to run a good candidate next time and she will be history. All she could talk about was Obama care and out the other side of her mouth she talked about the less fortunate and how she was on the lookout for them. What a load of crap the only ones she care about are the Bachmann's and her jesus freak followers.

Sadly, some actually believe my comment was partisanship. I was no fan of LBJ or the war in Viet Nam that was al;so started by lies and deception. Bachmann and Perry are both the heavy handed evangelical candidates, and both are dropping out after the first caucus.

Let any religious convictions guide you, not be the reason to run for office.

Not one of the radical right will admit that their actions put us here and their actions prevented democrats from baling the sinking ship of state. Until those who have transgressed against us suffer the same fate as Bush family friend Bin Laden will the American people trust government again. The republican agenda of if we do it then it's not illegal, immoral, or illigitimate remains the motto of the religous right and until that is replaced with some remorse the republicans only dig a deeper hole to crawl out of. The current group of republican "leaders" are small shovels indeed!
