Marijuana like you've never seen it before

What's next for medical marijuana? Hint: it doesn't involve a match, pipe or rolling papers. Some of it doesn't even get you high.

In Steve Kroft's 60 Minutes story this week, we saw how Colorado has capitalized, literally, on its medical cannabis program. We also saw how the state has become fertile ground for a marketplace of unconventional marijuana products to flourish. And we're not just talking about pot brownies.

Sodas, peanut butter sandwiches, truffles, breath sprays, skin ointments -- almost anything can be infused with marijuana, and in Colorado, entrepreneurs are developing all manner of new pot-infused product lines. These products are a far cry from the dorm-room stash of weed in a plastic baggy, and some of them deliver the medical benefits of the drug without the high.

In the above video, 60 Minutes Overtime sat down with 60 Minutes producer Frank Devine to learn more about the strange new world of non-smokable marijuana.

What do you think of these new pot products? Would you drink a pot-infused soda or eat a pot-infused truffle if marijuana were legalized in your state? Are marijuana-infused edibles the commercial future of pot?

by AMCcarhobbyman December 5, 2012 4:08 PM EST: DOCTORS need to get on board with this ! especially for senior citizens ! My dad passed away recently because his 'alzheimers'disease caused him to 'hear' voices, scared someone was trying to kill him and MOm. Doctors sedated him so much, his body just 'shut' down.

I realized doctors merely 'drug' seniors, cancer patients so much, they die, all at the excuse of old age etc.

Wake up... Give them 'brownies' they'll calm down and be happy. HELP!; Reply to this comment


by dantesanferno December 5, 2012 3:15 PM EST: Marijuana is really bad for you....if you don't believe me, watch the very well-made movie "Reefer Madness" which shows what can happen to regular people who smoke the "Devil's Weed"....bad things like insanity, and even worse, death. Most importantly, the movie explains that just one puff of this terrible drug will make you a hopeless addict with no chance of a normal life. Beware, America, don't succumb to the horrors of marijuana!!!; Reply to this comment

I have smoked pot since I was 16. I am now 55 and a Brown University Grad and a heart surgeon. For me it relaxes and makes me think better. I haven't had any problems with my practice. Maybe it is not for everyone but for me it is a good thing.

All marijuana use is "medical." If a doctor recommends it or if you self-medicate, it's all medical. But, then again, who should care what you do in the privacy of your own home, as long as you're not hurting others? Come on you Repubs and Tea Baggers, what about LESS government intrusion in our lives?

Not only did Alan not say he used pot, even if he did how would you know whether he had an addiction or that he supposed use had an negative effect upon on a family he may or may not have? Everything we do somehow affects the world around us. Heck your passing gas adds methane into the atmosphere but you don't see us suggesting you shove a cork up your a$$.

by bilrobi1 December 5, 2012 2:27 PM EST: Nobody. I'm a health care professional with a focus on mental health and addictions. There is no detox. protocol for cannabis because it's not addictive. If someone stops smoking marijuana nothing happens. There is no physical withdrawal. Unlike alcohol. A person in acute alcohol withdrawal can be real sick in some cases to the point of being fatal. Most people I know that use cannabis go to work every day,raise families,pay taxes and serve in responsible positions in our communities. They use cannabis like many people has a "nightcap". There are people who shouldn't use marijuana. There are people that shouldn't drink, drive a car. own a gun or for that matter have children. That doesn't that everybody shouldn't. Your apparent judgments of people who use marijuana for recreation is uninformed. Throw away the old DVD of Reefer madness and check out the real world.
