Arnold's affair: The elephant in the room

For her profile of Arnold Schwarzenegger this week, Lesley Stahl traveled around the world with the governor, with stops from Austria to the UK, from New Orleans to San Diego.

Schwarzenegger was "enormously charming" as a travel companion, says Stahl's producer Rich Bonin, and he often spoke of his soon-to-be-ex-wife, Maria Shriver, even showing the crew the spot where he'd proposed marriage to her in Austria. But during months of shooting for the 60 Minutes story, Schwarzenegger's affair with the family housekeeper was "the elephant in the room."

"I went all around the world with him," says Stahl. "And it never came up. He never brought it up, I never brought it up." Finally, at the end of Stahl's final interview with former Gov. Schwarzenegger, it became clear that the hard questions had to be asked. "He knew the time had come and I knew the time had come-- and we both did our jobs. Let's put it that way."

by just_sayin_ya_know October 7, 2012 4:22 PM EDT: I generally like 60 Minutes stories and as a journalist myself, I generally appreciate the quality of the reporting. I am outraged though that the program spent months on this particular story and sent Lesley Stahl traveling "around the world" with Schwarzenegger. The story was interesting, but it wasn't worth that kind of attention and didn't warrant so much spending. There is little money to go around in journalism these days and it should be spent more wisely on reporting that is meaningful to viewers as citizens of a democratic country. Schwarzenegger has the money to hire PR people and this was a glorified PR exercise. The public has no "right to know" in this case...his infidelities are an issue between him and his family, given he no longer serves in public office. So please 60 Minutes, entertainment stories should have a limited budget -- no "traveling around the world". Spend more on what really matters.; Reply to this comment


by tikicon October 3, 2012 7:59 AM EDT: Arnold's crazy behaviour would normally be consistent with subtance abuse..like alcoholism. Those crazy things he has done all sound like symptoms to me. I don't remember Ms. Stahl asking him that. Also, I wish she would have asked more questions about his family secrets regarding WW II.; Reply to this comment

I feel badly for both Arnold and Maria. Here is a man that could have run for President but succumbed to weaknesses of character due to the stress of his and her positions. I think he desperately wants to turn the clock back but can't do it. This is a man in terrible pain and I think Maria also feels this way. There should be a reconciliation at some future time between them because each person is extremely talented that should be heard not hidden. I want to wish them the best in dealing with the situation and hope that others can learn by this unfortunate episode.

As a former police officer, gang expert, and and corp security director, it seemed like Stahl & Arnold were on a date...the body language spoke volumes about how enamored Stahl was with Arnold. And, if Arnold is such a bad guy, and I think he is...isnt good ole Bubba, Bill Clinton, just as bad?

Clinton was impeached, lied under oath, had oral sex in the Oval Office with Monica Lewinski, accused of rape and sexual harrassment...and the media & democrats still love him? He's the hero of the 2012 DNC...this is BHO's boy????

While Arnold's sexual exploits may be of interest to 60 Minutes, the rest of America cares more about the poor condition of the economy, continued high unemployment (despite what BHO & his machine say) the failures of BHO's middle east policies, and the misrepresentation of facts by the Obama administration regarding Fast & Furious and the attack in Benghazi.

I am old enough to remember when 60 Minutes was a real news organization...a time in America when,if the 60 Minutes news crew showed up at your business or govt agency, there was a high pucker factor. Now, 60 Minutes in just more Hollywood infotainment. Hewitt must be turning in his grave...God rest his soul.

by catrun262 October 2, 2012 5:44 PM EDT: I agree. I felt the same way about Stahl and Arnold. She kept saying how charming he was. Didn't people say Scott Peterson was charming too? As an ex-cop, aren't most sociopaths charming? That is what someone once told me.

Clinton wasn't impeached was he? America had to put up with the weak attempts to impeach him. Really, call me immoral if you will, but I don't care who does who among the politicians, I do remember that when the Presidency was handed over from Clinton to Bush, the country's economy WAS NOT on the verge of collapse like it was in 2008. Funny how many people seemed to have conveniently forgotten that fact this election year.

Arnold showed his heart to the world, and it is to his credit that he took all of the factors involved and showed that he CARED. He cares for his wife, his mistress, his whatever... HE IS A MAN.
Enough said, and he even wrote a book about it.....
