Neil Armstrong's 2005 interview: "First Man"

"It felt like a train on a bad railroad track," is how Neil Armstrong described the 1969 liftoff of Apollo 11, perched atop a massive Saturn V rocket, heading to the moon. "And it was loud. Really loud."

Armstrong, who died at age 82, spoke with Ed Bradley in 2005 about that journey and how he came up with his famous line: "One small step for man; one giant leap for mankind" as he walked out onto the lunar surface, the first man ever to take those steps.

(2012) When I watch Neil after 4 decades and his interview during the Apollo mission, it brings sweet memories alive ! We celebrated the event-a successful moon landing mission by a fellow American. by rrfurno August 26, 2012 6:18 PM EDT: The Apollo program was a magical era in its technological achievements and human bravery. The program ran side by side the terrible years of the Vietnam war. It was simultaneously a gut-wrenching and inspiring decade. Those years are gone and so is the America that produced it. Armstrong got to see human our space exploration programs get cuts and cancellations over the next 4 decades. With today's worship of 'tax-cutting', America's greatness is dissolving. With it has gone our human space program. Armstrong was a quiet man but when (ironically) Obama cut NASA's Constellation budget, Armstrong (and other Apollo astronauts) appealed that America's human spaceflight program be conserved. Sadly, nothing has changed. Congress follows its budget-cutting mantra and cuts are made everywhere. Until the American people decide to pay for programs that once made our country great, we will continue lose (in one case) our spaceflight expertise. Few of our moon explorers remain. We, the American people, could honor them by demanding that our human space exploration funding and Constellation program be restored.; Reply to this comment
