The last Christian village in the Holy Land

This week, veteran 60 Minutes producer Harry Radliffe threw Overtime a real plum: the story of Taybeh.

He and correspondent Bob Simon stumbled on the tiny village of Taybeh while they were in the West Bank, reporting on the Holy Land's vanishing population of Christians.

What makes Taybeh the last all-Christian village in the Holy Land? The village has no mosque and is home to three distinct Christian communities: Roman Catholics, Greek Orthodox and Melkite Greek Catholics.

Taybeh's roots are deep, and for Christians, important: the biblical name of the village is Ephraim. According to the Bible, Jesus Christ came to Taybeh from Jerusalem before his crucifixion. John 11:54 states: "Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples."

The name of the village was changed from Ephraim to Taybeh around 1187, by the Islamic leader Saladin.

Today, Taybeh's population is dwindling, down to around 1500. The majority of Christians there are Greek Orthodox.

But have faith. The town's resident Roman Catholic priest, Father Raed Abu Sahlia, isn't going anywhere. As he told Bob Simon with a smile:

"I will assure you that even if all the Christians of the Holy Land will leave, and I will remain alone, I will get married, we will start another new generation."

I recently visited the West Bank, including the Christian city of Bethlehem, which is important to Chrisitans worldwide because it is the very birthplace of Jesus. The city faces a fate just as atrocious as Jerusalem and other Palestinian West Bank cities. The city is surrounded completely by the Israeli separation barrier which is essentially an apartheid wall. This giant concrete wall constricts movement and causes economic devastation of the city . 50% of the inhabitants are unemployed, and poverty affects both Christians and Muslims alike. It is clear that the Israeli apartheid and illegal occupation is causing this.
Thank you to 60 minutes for an accurate reporting. Michael Oren deserves to rot in hell.

by Abe_Bird December 26, 2012 7:24 AM EST: If Jesus were living today he sure was oppressed by the Arabs for being a Jewish settler in Beit Lehem (a Hebrew name) or "East" Jerusalem (another Hebrew name).
Christians are brutaly treated by Muslims in the ME for the last 100 years. Most of them escaped the Islamic brutality by huge waves of immigrations through all the century, from all Muslims states. Once there were huge Muslims' communications in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Egypt; and in each year their number is being decreased, mainly because the higly tension expressed by their Muslim neighbors. If one looks at Israel as a test case he sure can easily see the difference. The Christians Arab and non-Arabs community are flourishing and growing in numbers and wealth, while at the same time the number of Christians under the Arab Palestinian regimes in the West Band and Gaza are declining in numbers since 1994, the year Yasser Arafat arrived at the sene and took control of the main cities in the WB and Gaza. The numbers of Christians in main PA cities such as Beit Lehem and Ramallah are reduced by more than half, because Muslims started to pressure and acting violently against their Christian neighbors, by the protection and even encouraging of the PA and Hamas.

Israel has become the home, the epicenter, of False. The State has the main task of creating lies on a massive scale and distributing them throughout the world. "False" is the most universal "Product of Israel."

It is so thick and it spreads to the US with ease. The ingenuity, rather the "disingenuity," of US groups like AMCHA and Stand With US is breathtaking in this regard. That's why we need and value Bob Simon ...for his vigilance and defiance.

I am an American Jew and respected in the highest regard amongst Muslim and Christian Palestinians during my stay in the Palestinian territories.

It's true that the Christian and Muslim Palestinians live together peacefully. They work and support each other respectfully-- all trying to survive the harsh Israeli occupation.

My experience of the occupation and knowing Palestinians began as a former student of the Birzeit University (BZU) located in Bizet near Ramallah in the Palestinian territories. The BZU students' majority is Christian and Muslim Palestinians who attend classes together daily.
The BZU faculty has several Muslim and Christian Palestinians working together reverentially on campus. The BZU survival is funded solely by means of international support.

As well, there are several international students that attend the BZU. Like me, most internationals are there for summer programs and reside in the surrounding Christian/Muslim towns of Ramallah, Kober and Birzeit. I lived in Ramallah, renting an apartment from a Muslim Palestinian, along with Christians and Muslims renting in the same complex. My favorite hangout spot was Stars and Bucks (The Palestinian version of Starbucks) in the town center. Customers there are Christian, Muslim and even Jewish among others.

To dispute Oren's nonsense, I am a witness that Christians are not leaving because of the Muslims or Islam. It's because of the violent tactics by the IDF and oppression as a result of the Israeli occupation (which I feel Sixty Minutes did not expose enough).

The Palestinians are non-violent, honorable, and resilient people, whom I've come to know personally. Many which are dear friends. I sooo admire the hospitality they had given me and of each other in the Palestinian communities, even in the face of adversity.

What Michael Oren spews in the segment is typical rhetoric on Israel's favor in the media. Glad he hung himself in the lies questioned by Bob Simon.

It's discreditable to read all the Palestinian smears on the Sixty Minutes message boards. The anti-Palestinian posters I'm sure are paid to plant smears here. I hope this segment will encourage the public to seek out the truth. Pal Muslims attack Christian village - no one reports it
A must-read from Hisham Jarallah at the Gatestone Institute:
A few weeks ago, veteran CBS News correspondent Bob Simon reported on the plight of Christians of the Holy Land who have been leaving the region for many years.

In large part, Simon blamed the Christian exodus on Israel.

But had Simon visited the Christian village of Taybeh in the West Bank, he would have heard "the other side to the story."

This is a village whose population is 100% Christian. It is surrounded by a number of Muslim villages, some of which are extremely hostile.

The number of Christians living in Taybeh is estimated at less than 2,000. Residents say that another 15,000 Taybeh villagers live in the US, Canada and Europe, as well as South America.

Over the past few years, the Christian residents of Taybeh have been living in constant fear of being attacked by their Muslim neighbors.

Such attacks, residents say, are not uncommon. They are more worried about intimidation and violence by Muslims than by Israel's security barrier or a checkpoint. And the reason why many of them are leaving is because they no longer feel safe in a village that is surrounded by thousands of hostile Muslims who relate to Christians as infidels and traitors.

Just last week, scores of Muslim men from surrounding villages, some of the men armed with pistols and clubs, attacked Taybeh.

Fortunately, no one was harmed and no damage was caused to property.

Palestinian Authority policemen who rushed to the village had to shoot into the air to drive back the Muslim attackers and prevent a slaughter.

The attack, residents said, came after a Muslim man tried to force his way into a graduation ceremony at a girls' school in Taybeh.

The man, who had not been invited to the ceremony, complained that Christians had assaulted him. Later that day, he and dozens of other Muslims stormed the village with the purpose of seeking revenge for the "humiliation."

Were it not for the quick intervention of the Palestinian security forces, the attackers would have set fire to a number of houses and vehicles and probably killed or wounded some Christians.

Palestinian government and police officials later demanded that the Christians dispatch a delegation to the nearby Muslim villages to apologize for "insulting" the Muslim man. To avoid further escalation, the heads of Taybeh complied.

Also at the request of the Palestinian government, residents of the village were requested not to talk to the media about the incident.

Even some of the leaders of the Christian community in the West Bank urged the Taybeh residents not to make a big fuss about the incident.

This was not the first time that Taybeh had come under attack. In September 2005, hundreds of Muslim men went on rampage in the village, torching homes and cars, and destroying a statue of the Virgin Mary, after learning that a Muslim woman had been romantically involved with a Christian businessman from the village.

The 30-year-old woman had been killed by her family.

Western journalists based in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv have refused to report about the most recent attack on Taybeh, most probably because the story does not have an "anti-Israel angle."

Like Bob Simon, most Western journalists prefer to see only one side of the story. All they want is to find stories that shed a negative light on Israel.

Simon, by the way, has probably never heard of Taybeh.

The next time anyone wants to learn about the true problems facing the Christians of the Holy Land, he or she should head to Taybeh and conduct off the record and private interviews with the villagers.

Thank you CBS for fair reporting of the Palestinian occupation! It's unfortunate that 60 Minutes is under attack for reporting the actual impact of the Israeli occupation on Palestinians. It's interesting to hear about this under-reported facet of this issue

- The number of Christians in Beit Lehem decline mainly since 1994 when the PLO recieved control on the city and started tormenting the Christians.
- The tension between Muslim and Christian Arabs is abnormal. The Muslims kicked away Christians since 1917 from all around the ME. It's not a new phenomenon happening now in the wester bank of the Jordan River. Ask Helen Thomas why her Christian parents escaped from Lebanon?! See what the Muslims did to Christians in Iraq and Egypt the last years.
- Jesus was born and died as a Jew. Let's say that he murdered by the Romans because he was a Jew. Many other Jews were crucified too.
- Jesus never lived in Palestine. The name Palestine was given by the Roman occupier of Israel land more than 100 years after Jesus dead.
- The nowadays Christian Arabs are Not the descendents of the first century Christians. Many of the first Christians left the land because of Roman persecution. But the main harassment had been done by the Chatolic Crusaders in 1099 by killing and dporting Muslims, Jews and Greek Orthodox Christians. Most of the Christians escapef to the Eastern Bank of the Jordan River and to Babylon (Iraq today).
- - Taybeh is the Palestinians full control village since 1994. If there is a sustantial emigration to the US it's not because Israel. You have to check how the Muslims treat them and whether they decided to improve their lives in America. Most Taybeh residents came from Christian immigration after the Crusaders let Orthodox Christians, Jews and Muslims to enter to Wester Bank of Israel land.

Something got left out of the CBS Sixty Minutes documentary on Palestinian Christians, aired Sunday, April 22.

A question NOT asked by the champions of gotcha television who put together the item on the situation of Palestinian Christians that aired on the CBS Sixty Minutes programme on Sunday April 22, was this fairly obvious one: Why are Christians fleeing from every corner of the globe INTO Israel?

Israel is the only polity in the entire Middle East in which Christian numbers are growing absolutely. They have in fact increased 400 percent since 1948. Today there are about 163,000 Christians in Israel -- about 2.1% of the total population of around 7 million. This number is growing as Christians flee into Israel from all the nearby African states, such as Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia Somalia, Kenya and beyond. They are fleeing also from the states of the former Soviet Empire and from Muslim-majority communities around the world.

Incidentally, the Muslim population of Israel is also growing - from 100,000 in 1948 to 900,000 today -from 9.5% of the whole in 1948 to 14.8%. These Muslims vote in Israeli elections and have always held a significant role in the brokering of interests that go into forming Israeli governments. How can this reality be squared with the Arab cartoon-denunciation of life under the Israeli boot? It would have been good to hear Bob Simon ask this fairly obvious question.

The wall* is certainly an eyesore, and inevitably it has made life significantly more difficult for everybody. But it has served its purpose: since it was completed, loss of civilian lives by terrorist deeds has been reduced by at least 80%.

Since 1995, all aspects of daily life in the PA - economic policy, legal realities, schooling, and so on -- are presided over by the Palestine Authority. Simultaneously, persecution of Palestinian Christians by Palestinian Arabs has increased - a circumstance attested to without exception by all disinterested journalists and qualified scholars, and most thoroughly documented in the published books and articles of Justin Reid Weiner. The best clue to what life is like under that benign aegis is that between 1995 and 2004, 45,000 Arabs moved out of the PA and into Israel and that of this number four to one were Christians.

Israel does assume responsibility for the welfare of Arabs who live within her own borders. The most recent statistic surveys reveal that "Christian Arabs are Israel's best-educated and most prosperous demographic group."(Donna Rosenthal, The Israelis (New York: Free Press, 2003), p. 315.)

With their feet, the Christian Arabs and a goodly portion of Muslim Arabs are declaring their preference for Jewish rule over Muslim-Arab rule. Since the beginning of the Arab Spring, an estimated one-third to one-half of the Christian population of Iraq has been displaced from cities and towns where they have lived for centuries, some fleeing to the semi-autonomous Kurdish region, others abroad. Many of these are now resident in Israel. In Egypt, 100,000 have already left since the so-called Arab Spring began.

The bottom line (says Giulio Meotti, who is among the best informed European scholars of this phenomenon), "The Christian era in the Middle East is over." Everywhere, that is, except in Israel. The one feature that distinguishes Israel from all these other nations is that the former is the nation-state of the Jews, governed by Jewish laws, its government and other institutions reflecting Jewish character. As for all the others, Jews are either totally absent -- 800,00 of them having been driven out by Muslim mobs following the 1948 war --or present today only in miniscule numbers and living under constant threat of extinction.

The premise governing the Sixty Minute script was that the flight of Christians from the Holy Land is owing to intolerable conditions imposed upon the Palestinian Arabs by Israeli rule. The leaders of the various local churches, all of them Arab Palestinians, pulled out all the stops as they heaped blame for everything that is unhappy in the daily life of the Arabs of the land upon the fundamentally inhumane character of the Jews. Why then is all the traffic out of the lands where Arabs rule and into the only corner of the world in which Jews rule?

*The Security Barrier: only 8km of the 140km consist of concrete sections (wall) to prevent direct shooting.

by clarefrance April 27, 2012 4:32 PM EDT: I don't agree with what you have said it's all lies and not true,no Christians can flee into Israel,you need a visa which is rarely given to Palestinians who are in exile whether Muslims or Christians , Actually The israeli Government tries it's best to get rid of Christian palestinians by making it harder and harder for them to live there. Thanks to 60 minutes for showing the truth,I thank the Journalist for his integrity in showing the truth and not being intimated as other Journalists with Israeli lobbying ,God bless him and the Crew

The PLO took control of areas A+B which most of Arab villages sit. Until 2001 there were no checkpoints to check the Arabs passing into Israel. It was free as driving from NY to Washington, but much shorter, few miles. 250,000 Arabs, some Christians, found rescue and work in Israel since 1994, but Bob Simon won't tell you that. As I said the core of the Christian problem is the Muslims's attitude towards them. You can check it in Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt, Iran and other Muslim states.

The audience get the intimate feeling of strolling through the dusty roads of Taybeh, worshipping alongside parishioners in the church pews, and listening to the good father Raed Abu Sahlia while sipping a cup of tea (with the usual hefty spoonful of sugar). Too right that these churches should not become museums — Christians and non-Christians should go see for themselves what is happening there, then take constructive steps towards bringing about a just peace in the historic land of Palestine.; Reply to this comment

Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren not only called the head of CBS news in an attempt to quash a report on the displacement of Palestinian Christians by the Israeli Occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem, but he briefed Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu of the far right wing Likud Party on his attempt.

Here are the top ten reasons Israel's Likud Party would have wanted to censor American television news on this occasion (and of course we don't know all the occasions they have successfully done so):

1. The report told Americans that there are Palestinian Christians. Right wing Israelis have attempted to displace, expropriate and erase the Palestinian nation, and to convince Americans that Palestinians don't exist or if they do are enemies of the U.S. When the foe of the US was the Soviet Union, they made the Palestinians Communists. When the foe became al-Qaeda, they made the Palestinians violent fundamentalists. But if some percentage of Palestinians is Christians, then that fact disrupts the propaganda. In fact, millions of Palestinians are descended from the 700,000 or so Palestinians ethnically cleansed by the Israelis from what is now Israel in 1948, of whom about 10 percent were Christian.

2. The report mentioned that some Palestinians are Lutherans, Catholics and Episcopalians, establishing a link of commonality between them and Americans. The Israeli Likud Party wants Americans identifying only with Israelis, not with Palestinians.

3. The report told Americans that Israel is occupying and colonizing Palestinian land. Most Americans think it is the other way around because of the success of Likud disinformation.

4. The report let it slip that Palestinians in the West Bank need a permit to travel to Arab East Jerusalem and are subjected within the West Bank to humiliating check points that turn a 7 mile journey into an all-day ordeal. This system sounds an awful lot like the old South African Apartheid.

5. The report allowed Palestinians to speak for themselves and to refute Oren's anti-Palestinian talking points. It is a key principle of right wing Israeli propaganda that Palestinians should never be allowed to challenge the Israeli narrative on American television.

6. The report allowed a prominent Palestinian businessman and Coca Cola distributor to say that he knew of no Palestinian Christians who were leaving the West Bank and Jerusalem because of Muslims but that rather they were leaving because of Israeli oppression.

7. It allowed the Palestinians to point out that the West Bank now looks like Swiss cheese, with Israeli colonies grabbing the good land and water, and the stateless Palestinians pushed into the holes.
8. The report described the Palestinian Kairos Document, calling for nonviolent, peaceful struggle by Palestinians against Israeli Occupation and land grabs. Likud propaganda insists in racist fashion that all Palestinians are inherently angry and violent and that their protest against being made stateless and homeless by Israel is irrational.

9. The report quotes an Israeli scholar who puts "Political Judaism" on par with "Political Islam." It is a key principle of Likud propaganda that no movement in Israel may ever be compared to movements in the Muslim world.

10. The report allows Palestinians to point out that the way the Israelis built the Separation Wall isolated Bethlehem, Jesus's birthplace and a city that still is 18% Christian, had made it "an open-air prison."; Reply to this comment
