The hidden America

We sum up our economy with numbers: the Dow Jones Average, the unemployment rate, the price of a gallon of gas. During the country's recent recession, Scott Pelley and his "60 Minutes" team of producers and editors have worked to put faces in front of those numbers and tell the stories of the men, women, and children who have suffered in the economic decline.

Watch Scott Pelley's report.

by sirfred207 July 1, 2011 7:57 PM EDT: oh I guess you don't know, if your part of the white race and try to get food stamps in orlando , they will first tell you too, sell all your Jewelry, any paintings,antiques or cars (they dont care,how you would get to work)anything of value.then you might get some food stamps, maybe $90.00 for a family of 4. and people this is for real, I've seen it done to a friend of mine, who never missed a day of work, who never before asked for anything,and she had to have surgery, and they would not help her. by stormy9591 July 1, 2011 10:49 PM EDT: I totaly agree with you, all goverments are corrupt/corruptable, they can always find enough money to keep wars going, but never seem to find any to stop homelessnes, and poverty!! is that not a national disgrace.
Politicians of all partys promise that when they are in power things will change and get better, then as soon as they are in power they are afflicted with "memory loss" a vicious circle of self-serving manipulating hyenas.

I wish 60 minutes would report on the response by the community since the original airing of this story. Many churches and community organizations have stepped up to combat hunger and homelessness in Orlando. Millions of dollars have been raised and are currently providing assistance to some of these same families. CBS please follow-up on your reporting with the response of the communities and churches. I promise you that you will be blessed. There is still something good happening in our country today. We are doing alot better and the ones that helped us the most is FIRST BAPTIST OF ORLANDO They are walking with us through this and are just wonderful people. If you would like to help other homeless fanilies please go through them because they have done wonders for our family. We want to thank them and hope they continue to help others. by LIVVIESGG June 29, 2011 2:06 PM EDT: It's amazing to me how the "self righteous" can always look for a place to finger point! This is one of the most heart wrenching stories I have seen on 60 Minutes. People don't always "choose" how many children they will have. These are very obviously loving parents that are trying to keep their family together. They never dreamed they would lose it all. I saved this show to show to my great-grandchildren for when they spent the night with us yesterday. They are a girl 9, and a boy, 5. They share a room, and I have to admit, I am on their Dad all the time to get a larger house so she can have her own room. We watched this together, and shared that we must count our blessings..both parents have good jobs, they have plenty to eat, and none of their toys have been lost to a storage unit. Their parents are just waiting until the right situation comes up for them to get out of a rental home and into a larger one. This article is a grim reminder of what is going on in this country right now. This is just one family that needs help, and I'm resolved to find someone to help in our own community, as we ALL should be doing. I'm sure the person who chose to have only two childern must have a little extra to share with someone in need, having arranged such a perfect life and all. I challenge you!; Reply to this comment

Dear 60 Minutes:
This was an extremely poor piece of reporting. You did not once mention the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP... formerly Food Stamps). This program is under the USDA and served apx. 76 million people in 2010. Apx. 2/3 of the $133 billion dollar USDA budget in 2010 was spent on nutritional assistance from the main three programs: SNAP, reduced/free school breakfast / lunches and the WIC (Women, Infants and Children) program. It's hard to imagine you are unaware of the programs so why the omission?

They also said it again as Scott P. was being interviewed. Yet does it matter how much you know about the programs and not the problems? I don't believe so.

I direct this question to Scott Pelley. Why does somebody have 5 kids and not have a solid plan to support them? Do you believe in personal responsibility? I limited my family to two children because that is all I could afford.

by Jayjaybe June 26, 2011 11:06 PM EDT: Is there more dignity to having only two hungry kids instead of five? One hungry child is too much. Since the great depression, millions of families have grown and flourished and lived above the poverty line. It's not likely that any of these afflicted families had a plan for something that they couldn't anticipate. I didn't see any example among these families of a lack of personal responsibility. When the parents confront their struggles with the best efforts available, they're being fully responsible. Sometimes, for some folks, circumstances are less fortunate than for other folks. Like Scott Pelley, I saw a compelling dignity among these examples. They clearly felt that self-pity is irresponsible. Best wishes in your case! From this product of the Great Depression, I don't wish such travails on anyone. May your kids be always healthy and happy.
