If any American reporter can give us perspective on the uprisings in the Arab world, it's Bob Simon, a "60 Minutes" correspondent who lived in the Middle East off and on for 30 years. In this video, Simon sits down with "Overtime" editor Ann Silvio and debriefs us on his reporting assignment to Tunisia last week.

by mpw2penn February 24, 2011 1:41 AM EST: congratulations to the people of tunisia! the reason you have a dictator was for a long time the world thought you need one to get you all in line and well behaved to the likes of these dictators. not anymore. this is a concerted effort of a people who are fed up with the system and wants to proclaim to the world that they can become a society that can rule themselves by having a democratically elected leader. we are looking at a new tunisia, to become a country that will adhere itself to the rule of law, to allow its educated people to lead and help those among them that needs help. a society that will respect one another. a country that is willing to become a good neighbor and of good standing in the global community of nations. by disi301 February 23, 2011 9:03 AM EST: As a Lebanese American who has travelled through the Middle East, I want to congratulate you on the wonderful program this past Sunday on the Tunisia Revolt. I have witnessed the biased opinion of Middle Easteners in the US. And I have also witnessed Middle Easteners who are extremely well educated, with careers & degrees, polyglots who speak sometimes 5 & 6 languages and work in menial jobs. I welcome the changes & the transparency of the new generations. Let us see what comes out of these uprisings. Hopefully, better jobs & living conditions.; Reply to this comment

by prometheus77 February 21, 2011 2:39 AM EST: I think a 130 meter high statue of Bob Simon with his head rammed up his rectum in classic neo-seventies "journalism" fabricator-fantasist and post-internet de-facto social networking worshipper stylized in early-millennial American-propagandist -- would be a FAR MORE appropriate effigy of significance than a statue of Mark Zuckerberg.

Maybe something along the Mediterranean coast or Persian Gulf. Something as a warning to the Arab world -- the American free press is planting opinion on what you do and why, regardless if anybody cares. Like the rest of us aren't watching Al Jazeera instead of facts and opinions that matter.

No matter how relevant Bob Simon thinks his obtuse judgement and opinion matters in this regard.; Reply to this comment

I've looked at the map and wonder how in the world, literally, can you consider Tunisia an Arab state in the middle east. It's in Africa, not on the Arabian Penninsula, and in fact it's west of Italy.

by jsf14 February 21, 2011 6:53 AM EST: "Arab" generally refers to "peoples who speak Arabic as their native tongue." When people from the Arabian penninsula invaded and occupied North Africa, most of the locals started speaking Arabic, just as the people who lived in Italy som 900 years earlier had stopped speaking their own languages and started speaking Latin when the Romans overran them. There are people in North Africa who never gave up their own languages. Strictly speaking, those peoples, such as the Berbers, are not Arabs. Strangely, Jews who lived in countries where the language switched to Arabic, and who started speaking Arabic like everyone around them, are generally not referred to as Arabs.
