At Home With Boxer Manny Pacquiao

President Obama isn't the only politician featured on "60 Minutes" this Sunday: meet Filipino congressman Manny Pacquiao. But Bob Simon didn't travel 8,500 miles just to profile a politician. "Pacman" is also one of the best boxers the world has ever seen.

In his "60 Minutes" report this week, Bob Simon told us the great rags-to-riches story of Pacquiao's life. Raised dirt poor in the Philippines by a single mom, he literally fought his way out of poverty. Pacquiao has since earned millions, becoming the first fighter to win world champion titles in seven different weight divisions. Today, crowds wait outside the boxer's gates, hoping for handouts.

In his conversation with "60 Minutes Overtime" editor Ann Silvio, Simon takes us to the Philippines, where young and old gather to watch Pacquiao's fights. This wasn't Simon's first dispatch from the streets of the Philippines - 24 years ago, he reported on the Filipino revolution of 1986 for CBS News. What Simon saw then, he sees now: an entire nation, galvanized.

by poorbuthappy May 9, 2011 7:58 AM EDT: bob simon has every right to be upset. it's a scheduled interview we can't impose filipino time. there is no excuse for being late. i'm 100 percent filipino but my parents never raise us to be late. if they say 10 am you come 10 or 20 minutes early. you can be late 5 minutes max but to not show up on an appt. come on this is inexcusable. i wouldn't wait for him and i'm a big manny pacquiao fight i rent ppv everytime he has fights but i wouldn't go to the extent of waiting for an hour or so for manny no matter how famous he is. he's time is valuable and so as everyone else's.

with regards to being impoverished and not having joy in our lives that is where i completely disagree with bob simon. you can be poor and be happy because when you're surrounded with your family and friends who genuinely love and care for you that's joy, that's happiness it's something that can't be replaced with millions of dollars or success in life.

Manny can't be compared with Jesus and I think it's disrespectful to do so.

My advice to Manny is hire people who can do their job well and keep track with your schedule fire the inconfident ones.

I'm not sure how well Manny knows he's schedules but he should be on top of it if he's people can't. I hate people when their late and this is just not a filipino thing it's an american trait too but it's worst in the philippines.; Reply to this comment


by practical8 May 6, 2011 7:54 AM EDT: I am not here to offend. But Mr. Bob Simon, I think you are taking this opportunity to put on a bad name on Manny Pacquiao. These are the particular reasons you should not be offended for him being late: First, the show 60 minutes is not popular in the Philippines. To a fact, the show is unknown. Manny Pacquiao would not have a clue who is interviewing him and what for. If only he knew that 60 minutes is a legitimate high-profile show in the US, no doubt this interview would his top priority. Remember this guy has an ambition. He would definitely grab this opportunity to be watched by millions of high-profile viewers. Second, Manny is a very busy guy. And being a very busy and highly demanded guy. You are sure to wait. Third, he has the value of "Filipino Time". Being a person from the provinces and slums of the Philippines, he is more filipino that you can think of. He clearly represents the Philippines culture and values. One has to understand the interviewee's background and culture to truly capture the whole interview's essence. Mr. Simon, you had mistake in capturing the message of your interview. It is irresponsible to use this lateness to have a bad light "being a superstar" to Manny Pacquiao. This guy is a humble guy coming from the slums and religious. He would talk and share to anyone if he only can. I do not like comparison of him to Jesus. I does not make sense due to him being a Filipino devote Catholic. He would not at all try to be Jesus knowing his place in religion. He is just loved by his people. And this people happens to be in an poverty inflicted country just finds themselves free-riding to Manny success. Being with Manny, they think as well that they can get out of poverty or even have a shot with success.; Reply to this comment

The main reason why he never showed up in the interview is the language barrier. He can handle ambush interviews because he has plenty of memorized answers in his mind, but a 60 minute interview...never bet on it. If you had an interpreter then you could have a chance to have spoken to him. You might ask...why is he in congress if he is not articulate.

YES he is not articulate and cannot comprehend legislative bills and congressional matters...but his advisers can. He will just have documents interpret to him in his dialect and ask his advisers how to approach the matter. Then sign.

The best chance to get a 60 minute interview with him is to get a filipino broadcaster pitching for 60 minutes, then he will be comfortable.; Reply to this comment

FRFLO.... Are you Serious ?? Don't take this the wrong way, it is not a bad thing for the west to look at the Philippines as "impoverished" I am Australian, lived all over Asia, including Manila for years. The Philippines is the only place where i felt that my life was in constant danger. Everyone being personally searched for carrying guns every time you enter a mall.. This place is very dangerous. The Philippines is very poor. Most people live on meager salaries.

The main problem is the issue between Church and State, you cannot have the Church running the country. This means that the population explosion must be controlled, in 10 years the Phillipines with have nearly 200 Million people,and with the corruption, no one is putting money into the public services Education, Hospitals and Roads. The only way to resolve the problems in Philippines is to control the population explosion, introduce condoms and stop pre-marital sex.

The response I always received while living in the Philippines was that using condoms was against the church .... however, seems a convenient argument when I asked about pre marital sex.

How can you habe a guy who drives a taxi (with 10 Children) earning 200 dollars a month. Something must be done to stop the Church controlling the Govt in Philippines.

There is no middle class in the Philippines. 1 Million very rich people and 90 Million people impoverished, unlike western countries, yes, there are poor in all countries, but in the USA, UK, and Australia we have broad middle class, low poverty and excellent services. In Australia we have Free education, Free National Public Health Care.

I have been a fan of Manny for the last 5 years. He is a true inspiration to all people, not just Philippine people. If Manny shines a light on the corruption, impoverished and issues with the Church controlling the govt, the this is a good thing, I hope he can fix them, for the good of all people in the Philippines, there are some great people there !

I reckon you are one of these people who goes around Asia for their sex tours or you're just an ex-pat with a crab mantality. Why would you care if Filipinos are miserable. I can't believe that this inspiring story probably made a lot of Filipinos proud and happy and touch their lives personally and you just have to **** on their parade.

by poorbuthappy May 9, 2011 8:07 AM EDT: ok which part of the philippines did you stay? i think your comment is ignorant. go to indonesia, thailand, malaysia they do have problems. where i'm from in the phils. they don't search us for guns and a lot would rather use their money to buy food or pay bills than buy guns. you can go in dc and maryland and find kids with guns not in the phils.

Maybe in f............ Australia you can get excellent services (according to your bias opinion) but not here in the U.S.

Who are you to judge people with big families here in the U.S. I have a lot of friends who are wealthy and have 1 or 2 kids and they're complaining how hard it is to raise these kids. Are you f.........kidding me.

This is a good story. There are many times when we have been called to meet with Manny at 7:00 p.m., around 1:30 a.m. Manny's staff will come in an tell us Manny's is not available right now. We go back to the hotel, couple more days we get a call meet Manny at a certain place where he is shooting a TV commercial. We sit there until 2:00 a.m., finally Manny comes in at 2:00 a.m. and we have a meeting. Manny is known for doing this, and you just have to wait it out. That is the story of doing business with Manny. Everyone who has delt with the PacMan team knows the routine, nothing changes. You go with the flow.
