Eminem & Anderson Cooper: Behind the Scenes

What's the fastest way to draw a crowd in Detroit? Have CNN's Anderson Cooper and rap star Eminem walk down a city sidewalk with "60 Minutes" cameras trailing.

In this week's episode of "60 Minutes Overtime," you'll tag along as Eminem gives Cooper a tour of his old haunts in Detroit, including the neighborhood where the musician grew up near 8 Mile. The unlikely pair also makes a stop at the local Burger King that played a big role in young Marshall Mather's life - both as a refuge and a kind of fast-food writing lab.

Cooper and Eminem developed a rapport over the weeks that it took to shoot the story. When our correspondent convinces the rapper to do some freestyle rhyming in his private recording studio, Eminem does an impromptu rap about Anderson. It's not a full-on battle or beat down, but Anderson admits that Eminem lands a "glancing blow."

But the knock-out comes later. Also in this episode, watch Eminem do his own version of what we call the 60 Minutes "I'ms" (as in "I'm Steve Kroft; I'm Lesley Stahl; I'm Bob Simon...") Check it out and tell us what you think.

In my life (over 60 now) there have been artists whose music when I first heard it; I hated. Deep down inside I knew it was gonna go far because, regardless of the characteristics of the "genre" there is underlying truth. That causes me, (the listener) to ignore the "vehicle" and deal with the message.
The backspin on this is that the message draws me into the music and I start liking the music. Thanks Marshall, its been good hating it and I look forward to liking it more; Reply to this comment

Did you ever think that maybe your father hasn't tried to contact you since you got famous because he doesn't want to mess your life up anymore? or that maybe he wouldn't want you to think he only wants to know you because your famous? This may sound like a cop out excuse but for real tho, maybe he wants/wanted better for you than what he can/could give you. Sometimes it's better to not know than to know and not wanna know.

I'm not the best dad out there, but my daughter has always known who here dad is and that she doesn't have to look for me cause I'll be there for her. Just think what Em could've done if he had support from one parent....just to know that he could depend on 1 person in the world to say it's gonna be alright. What your're saying is just an way to make the loser feel good about what they did. But it just even worse when you say it out loud.

god i dont know what to say when it comes to EMINEM the greatest,the most influent and honest artist i've ever seen in my entire life.i just can't find the right words to describe what i feel,i cant express how thankful i am for what he showed me of real life,for showin' each and every one of us to fight for what we believe,to fight for whom we love.. showin us that giving up is not an option,proving to us that this world is ours for the taking..teachin' every individual,listening to his music that You can do anything you set your mind to.. only god knows how many times his pure music helped me to get through so many tough times in my life,when i had no one to talk to,when i didn?t know what to do with my life.or what i'm gonna do in the future. his music helps people in the ways that no other human being is capable to do and of course that's what I believe!and i know for sure that even 20years from now i wont change that belief!!actually i won?t EXchange that belief for the whole world itself!.. we wish you a long life full of happiness man!we love you EM

by wolfenlove October 16, 2010 12:08 AM EDT: My grandson (15) and I are both big fans of Eminem. We watched the 60 Minutes segment together and have shared Em?s music many times. He is a rare entertainer, in that nothing he does is contrived. His music is real, from the heart, and more brutally insightful than Freud could have ever been. Marshall is able to articulate his insight like no other, and with the amazing flare of a true artist. (That word ?artist? is thrown around casually today by so many, but back ?in the day,? only a chosen few were called artists.) Eminem is one of those extremely rare, gifted people ? a true artist. by mbrooks1098 October 15, 2010 9:12 PM EDT: Hi, like most on here I loved the interview. I am on the wrong side of 30, educated and white and love the Recovery album. I find so much to identify with even though our worlds were and might still be very different. I swear I look funny walking around my upper class neighborhood with my dog singing WTP, Won't Back Down, and 25 to Life especially when Almost Famous starts playing.. Love the Rothlisberger line and the thing about it is if you listen to what he has to say it's really funny. I am convinced my neighbors love hearing the album on our outside speakers... They need to be schooled... I would really like to see him expand his tour. I will pay really good money to see him perform. This is going to sound pollyanna but I want to see him succeed. I want him to take to Recovery and stick with it. If he can do this sober, what can't he do? So, should someone read this who has the ability to expand the Recovery tour please come to Dallas. I have already set money aside in the hopes it will happen. Good luck and all the best,
