Rockstep redux: Pinn Panelle covers Skrillex's "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites"

(CBS) - We've written before about the art of transforming electronic music into a live performance. Most DJ's spend hours hunched over a laptop crafting their tunes, and it might not seem like those beeps, bloops and screeches can be replicated with physical instruments. Here to prove us wrong is the band Pinn Panelle and their cover of Skrillex's "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites."

As the band makes clear in the video description, "There are no sequences, or backing tracks playing behind the band. All wobbles are live." Well done, dudes.

by danyooo October 27, 2011 1:06 AM EDT: you guys suck. what they are doing is pretty fantastic. they are breaking down each part of skrillex song and using a different tool to play a near accurate, if not, spot on sounds. take the hot hand on the bass for instance. the wobbles in 'dubstep' are usually made on a computer, or slowing down and changing the pitch of a keyboard note. this bass player kills it. and the voice splitting on the other synth. take into consideration the time it takes to create the original (skrillex) and breaking it down so parts can be shared amongst a whole band (pinn panelle).; Reply to this comment

seriously, do some homework guys. a lot of people read this stuff. at least have your facts together. be less biased. :)

by WHITNEYRIDER September 30, 2011 12:10 AM EDT: There is much in this video that has not been done before. for example, the "wobble" bass line is typically created via synths/filters/knob tweaking on a PC with software. The fact that this sound has been created live, no knob tweaking and with a real bass is a breakthrough. Please show us other examples of this? I do not think it has been done.

Ok, here is the thing. What they are doing is not all that amazing. Yes, they are not using a sequencer to keep everything nice and synced up (as any moron can hear) but they are indeed using some of the same synth equipment and effects processors that any electronica producer would use. What they are doing is NOT that amazing. If they want to seem great, try doing it ONLY with their guitars or something (impossible) Its the nature of the beast to require such things. CBS, please PLEASE research your stories better before you start making fallacious claims about some music group.

And this isn't a news article, just a showcase of something they found to get traffic to the CBS site.

You're just splitting hairs with some of the wording of the description and only to talk down a band paying homage to someone they like listening to. Stop being so butt hurt.
