"Animated Sheet Music" makes music make sense (and looks cool while doing so)

(CBS) - I'm a visual person and always learned best through seeing how things work rather than simply hearing it through explanation. That is a major part of why I find the following video entitled "Animated Sheet Music" so fascinating.

I honestly think if I watched this over and over again (and perhaps saw a few more examples), someone like myself would learn sheet music in no time at all. The idea behind this video is simple, yet genius, and oddly enough reminds me a bit of karaoke with the music appearing as it plays. So what do you think? by rsager999 August 28, 2011 9:47 PM EDT: As musicians, it's sometimes hard to remember when we didn't grasp what all that stuff was on the paper. Not seeing the whole page makes the reading harder because we instinctively see the music as a whole even as we read the specific notes in the exact spot we are in the music. Just as someone reading out loud is actually looking two or three words ahead of their speaking voice, so musicians look ahead in order to be preparded for what's coming up.

As a music teacher, I find that I prefer this animated sheet music to the other suggestions some readers have made. A person new to reading music will often become overwhelmed by the complicated chicken scratchings we call music. :)

Even with the "highlighting" concept, the rest of the music is visible and distracting. However, with this approach the person's whole focus is on the written elements appearing as they are hearing it allowing the mind to begin to connect what it hears with what it sees: the basis of all written language.

It can be difficult to place ourselves into the mind of a non-music reader, but once we do, the "appearing" music concept is a sound educational concept. (no pun intended!)

by RogerInHawaii August 24, 2011 9:39 PM EDT: It would be much, much better if the music was always shown (rather than popping up with each new note) and the notes merely highlighted somehow as they were played.

And, I suspect that many different kinds of "animated sheet music" is already available. Perhaps A Google search by the author is in order.; Reply to this comment
