WOW: Tornado strikes kids' soccer game

(CBS) - It looks like the perfect day for soccer: nice weather and blue skies. But then suddenly a tornado forms in the middle of the soccer field, forcing the children and their coaches to run for cover. This video is a shocking reminder of how quickly weather can turn from fair to life-threatening and back again. Fortunately no one was injured.

Japanese news station SBC originally reported the story. The video is from 2006, long before the troubles that Japan is currently dealing with. The cyclone that struck the soccer game is more accurately considered a dust devil rather than a tornado, but try telling that to the kids hugging the ground as their tents are lifted into the air.

by taxpayingvoter April 4, 2011 1:28 PM EDT: A tornado starts in the clouds during aa thunderstorm, this is a dust devil and not even a big one. Dust devils go ground up due to thermals and this one is big but not that large. We have them here in Southern Arizona that can flip a small car over.; Reply to this comment

If dust devils are now considered newsworthy by CBS, send a reporter to New Mexico and you can file a couple of thousands of these non-stories every summer.; Reply to this comment

They have dust devils out in west texas but when I was there I never saw anything as large as this one.

A tornado -- a real one -- hitting that close to anyone would have done significant damage to everything and everyone on the field. Get your terminology straight. NOT a tornado!
