Updated at 4:57 p.m. ET: Susan G. Komen for the Cure denies decision was politically motivated

(CBS/AP) Planned Parenthood and Susan G. Komen for the Cure, two iconic organizations that have assisted millions of women for years, are no longer partners. The nation's leading breast-cancer charity severed its ties with Planned Parenthood affiliates.

Why? Many suspect the cutoff is linked to the abortion debate. Komen has been under fire by anti-abortion activists, after its connection to the pro-choice organization was publicized.

Komen says the key reason is that Planned Parenthood is under investigation in Congress - a probe launched by a conservative Republican who was urged to act by anti-abortion groups. Komen spokeswoman Leslie Aun said the charity recently adopted criteria barring grants to organizations that are under investigation by local, state or federal authorities.

The divide is wrenching for some of those who've learned about it and admire both organizations.

"We're kind of reeling," said Patrick Hurd, who is CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Virginia - recipient of a 2010 grant from Komen - and whose wife, Betsi, is a veteran of several Komen fundraising races and is currently battling breast cancer.

"It sounds almost trite, going through this with Betsi, but cancer doesn't care if you're pro-choice, anti-choice, progressive, conservative," Hurd said. "Victims of cancer could care less about people's politics."

Planned Parenthood said the Komen grants totaled roughly $680,000 last year and $580,000 the year before, going to at least 19 of its affiliates for breast-cancer screening and other breast-health services.

"It's hard to understand how an organization with whom we share a mission of saving women's lives could have bowed to this kind of bullying," Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, told The Associated Press. "It's really hurtful."

Anti-abortion groups, in contrast, welcomed the news. The Alliance Defense Fund praised Komen "for seeing the contradiction between its lifesaving work and its relationship with an abortionist that has ended millions of lives."

"While it is regrettable when changes in priorities and policies affect any of our grantees, such as a long-standing partner like Planned Parenthood, we must continue to evolve to best meet the needs of the women we serve and most fully advance our mission," said a statement issued by Komen Tuesday.

Planned Parenthood has over 800 health centers nationwide and is the largest provider of abortions in the U.S. It provides an array of other services as well, including cancer screening - according to Planned Parenthood, its centers performed more than 4 million breast exams over the past five years, including nearly 170,000 as a result of Komen grants.

Komen, founded in 1982, has invested more than $1.9 billion since then in breast-cancer research, health services and advocacy. Its Race for the Cure fundraising events have become a global phenomenon. Still, Komen has been a target of anti-abortion groups since it began its partnerships with Planned Parenthood in 2005. Most recently, in December, Lifeway Christian Resources, the publishing division of the Southern Baptist Convention announced a recall of pink Bibles it had sold because some of the money generated for Komen was being routed to Planned Parenthood, HealthPop reported.

Aun, in a telephone interview, said Komen was not accusing Planned Parenthood of any wrongdoing.

"We want to maintain a positive relationship with them," she said. "We're not making any judgment."

Stephanie Kight, a vice president with Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties, said her conversations with local Komen leaders indicated there was a shared sense of frustration over the national Komen decision.

"One of the things these organizations share is the trust of women across the United States," Kight said. "That's what we're concerned about - not losing the trust of these women, who turn to both of us at their most difficult moments."

Susan G. Komen for the Cure said in a statement that it's decision had to do with new policies that stemmed from an internal review of its granting process, not politics.

"We are dismayed and extremely disappointed that actions we have taken to strengthen our granting process have been widely mischaracterized," a spokesperson for Susan G. Komen for the Cure told CBS News in an emailed statement.  "We regret that these new policies have impacted some longstanding grantees, such as Planned Parenthood, but want to be absolutely clear that our grant-making decisions are not about politics."

Would not a reasonable standard be "under judicial prosecution or conviction" rather than investigation? I understand the fiduciary responsibility to make sure funds are used for the purposes intended, and that if a court has determined that there is sufficient evidence that a crime or contract breach has occurred, then it is reasonable to withhold further funding until the matter is resolved. However, even specious accusations may prompt an investigations. Do you want to ruin you partnerships and mission with every claim from someone in a tin foil hat?

This is totaly political I do not believe what they said the new director commented before her views with Sarah Palin and their mission. It is very odd she is hired and funds for Planned Parenthood is axed with a lam reason why? Planned parenthood acording to her is under investigation NOT guility of anything officially. These funds that go to Planned parenthood goes for breast cancer ONLY exams for the poor it has nothing to do with abortions. I will only donate to Planned Parenthood.
This is scary to me as a US citizen with politics taking control and more scarey is a possible new president that has similar faith and views what will happen with the control of our country this is a perfect example.
So make sure when you are checking that box for our new president you have done a good background check on their positions that are so important to our freedom we have fought so hard to protect.

I'm going to point out that there are breast cancer research foundations other than the Komen Foundation to which one can donate. I suggest a search for breast cancer research organizations if you want to still fund breast cancer research but don't want to fund the Komen Foundation.

Komen foundation is in the business of breast cancer research not eugenics.

It is about time someone started following their mission.

Anyone with critical thinking skills can see that the specious allegations and Congressional inquiry by US Rep. Cliff Stearns are unfounded and entirely politically motivated. Planned Parenthood is regularly audited to ensure compliance with the Hyde Amendment, and these audits have never turned up any evidence of wrongdoing. Thus the justification used by SGKF to eliminate future grants (esp in light of their funding $7M in grants to Penn State, which is under multi-level gov't investigations) is simply a deceptive cover for taking sides in the politics of reproductive rights -- which has nothing to do with the organization's mission to fight breast cancer.

The Susan G. Komen foundation is a far right wing political organization. Planned Parenthood's patients are, for the most part, poor. As we know from the recent comments by Romney, the right wingers don't care about pooe people. The Komen Foundation was founded by rich people for rich people. Cutting off Planned Parenthood serves two goals of the Komen Foundation: first, it removes funds from an organization that services poor people; second, it frees up more money to channel to right wing politicans.

The Komen Foundation is despicable because it takes money under the faslse pretense that it is concerned with women's health when it is only concerned with the health of rich women and the furtherance of its own political agenda.

Don't give them any money and don't participate in any of their events, which they use to further their political agenda. Unless, of course, you are a right wing republican. The Komen Foundation want's only money from radical right wing Republicans. Independents and Democrats need not apply. It should be re-named the Susan G. Komen Tea Party Foundation.

First off yes I have needed low cost services during my life but there are other places to go for help other then a place where they hide behind the cover of "helping" woman when in fact they are giving low dose birth control or defective condoms out so you will be a return customer for their abortion services. How is that helping woman. Yes woman do have the right to determine how many kids are brought into this world but there are other options other then abortion to deal with that. How about safe sex, no sex, tubes tied etc.. What needs to be looked at is the fact that the number one supporter of breast cancer health(Komen foundation) pulled out of planned parenthood who claims to be concerned about breast cancer. Planned Parenthood centers admitted they do not do mammograms. Every Planned Parenthood, without exception, tells the women calling that they will have to go elsewhere for a mammogram, and many clinics admit that no Planned Parenthood clinics provide this breast cancer screening procedure.

As far as being for woman's rights, I am for the rights of ALL including those of the unborn. Again, check out www.abort73.com to get the facts and see first hand the damage that is done through abortion.

"they are giving low dose birth control or defective condoms out so you will be a return customer for their abortion services."

Seriously? Defective condoms?? Repeat customers??

Welcome to the deep end.

I whole-heartedly agree! Facts are that abortion increases the possibility of getting breast cancer. So why should the SGK foundation fund Planned Parenthood, the world's largest abortion provider (not a mammogram provider)!? That's hypocritical and not too smart. So, I'll not be funding SGK if they continue to support Planned Parenthood. I do not believe in murdering babies (not fetuses as some prefer to call them). If some of your readers think I'm a stupid, right-wing Christian conservative - I'm happy to accept your label. When I stand before God, at least I won't have murder on my conscience.

I have been an active participant for the "cure". I will no longer participate, and will actively canvass my friends and associates to withdraw their support and contribute to a more worthwhile and unbiased organization, or I will start my own. This is a cause I believe in and I don't believe they now deserve my support. This is too political. As a Registered Nurse, I know for sure that Politics has no exemptions when it comes to pain and human suffering

When are the people going to wake up and realize Planned parenthood is a money making organization. The komen foundation did the right thing as their goal is to save lives. Since 2008 PPFA was responsible for 825,564 abortions at 329,455 a year of which they received $487 million in tax dollars. How many mamograms did they peform since 2008? PPFA new annual report shows their net assets as of june 30,2010 is $1,009,600,000.....So if you people want to give them your money go ahead..

"We regret that these new policies have impacted some longstanding grantees, such as Planned Parenthood, but want to be absolutely clear that our grant-making decisions are not about politics."-
Really? Since when have investigations by Congress, on an organization such as this one, not been of the political kind. You have bowed to the politics simply by changing your policy to include "under investigation by (any) authority"-Remember, our justice system is based on "innocent until proven guilty." It is very clear in this article that PP is under investigation due to anti-abortion group pressure to a conservative Republican with no backbone.
