Pink Bibles pulled over Planned Parenthood link

(CBS/AP) Breast cancer awareness has turned a plethora of objects pink - including Bibles. But the pink-bound version of the Holman Christian Standard Bible has now been recalled by the Southern Baptist Convention's publishing division, because some of the sales money was given to Planned Parenthood.

A portion of the purchase price went to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. LifeWay Christian Resources, the Bible's publisher, made the move after receiving complaints that some Komen affiliates were helping fund cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood clinics, which also provide abortions.

"The sign might as well read, "Buy a Bible and support abortion!" wrote Susan Tyrrell, editor of the Christian news website LifeNews.

How do breast cancer awareness advocates feel about the move?

The Komen foundation issued a statement in which it said all proceeds from the Bible sales were going to breast cancer screenings and expressed disappointment in LifeWay's decision.

The Bibles had been in stores since October.

by angelofurnightmare December 17, 2011 10:24 AM EST: I see tons of religious and political views here...The point is that a bible should never be sold to profit an organization that supports abortion. I am sorry. It sucks that the money will not be given to Susan G Komen but also that foundation should have considered where to donate the money for the exams. There are tons of places that do breast exams and mammograms that DO NOT perform abortions. I am completely against abortion because there are hundreds of contraceptive now and there is no need to perform them. Also a fetus may not legally be a person but I advise all of you to take a look at abortion procedures and how they are performed...these are things we would be appalled to see happen to an animal much less something human. It does look bad for the church to have any affiliation with Planned Parenthood; Reply to this comment

Why does no one ever think the "choice" was made when you had sex? All of you that tout freedom of choice, have you ever read a medical report on the procedure of an abortion? It is gruesome and barbaric.
Most utilize abortions in lieu of birth control. And it IS a living human being. Just because you irresponsibly refer to the fetus as something other than human life, doesn't make you correct.

by aChangeOfIdeas December 17, 2011 7:49 AM EST: No, technically a parasite is an organism of a different species that receives nutrients from a host organism. An embryo/fetus/baby is not a separate species.
2happy I agree with you, the original "choice" was at the time of sex but there are times when the "choice" was one-sided (rape).

Yeah, some people just live to cut off their noses to spite their face. Instead of looking at it as an opportunity to introduce more people to their faith thru their bibles, they have chosen to abandon the cancer-stricken poor altogether. Way to go false-CHRISTIANS!

Well, nickiandyou, you've used an interesting lead sentence. Let's just say people like you who are comfortable with child-slaughter are willing to cut off a baby's nose, and arms and head and legs, are right to talk about cutting things. As for Christians, or people of any other faith or lackthereof, objecting to abortion, I say good for them. After all, no matter what our religious or non-religious viewpoint, we all lived the first stage of our lives in our mother's wombs. Even you, nickiandyou, were once a fetus (Latin for small child).

Further, if an agency did wonderful things like offered health care to the poor and taught people how to make otherwise healthy choices, but tortured and killed animals, would you not find reason to object? Or is it some losses, like the lives of helpless children, are simply less important to somebody like you?

The fact that Christ himself came to earth not as a grown man but an unborn baby speaks for itself.

by Desgin_for_Life December 16, 2011 1:54 PM EST: The logic behind the comment, " Buy a Bible and suport Abortion" is quite mind-boggling. I do believe that Planned Parenthood provides more services than just abortions to its partons. As a college student, I know this first hand. I am no longer on my parents medical plan and cannot afford my own at the moment. Because I am on a limited budget, I do choose to go to plan parenthood to have my yearly exams done and to acquire contraceptives. I am greatful that there is an organization (Planned Parenthood)that will provide servies like this, that allow myself as well as others who are in the same situation to make the decision to "PLAN" ahead and not get pregnant before we are even capable to support ourselves.; Reply to this comment

What is this holiday season about? Love. I say to all of you, I who has faced breast cancer, and almost died several times in these last two years, that the most important thing that all of you need to do is to be patient, loving, and understanding. A person has the right to run their business anyway they want to as long as it does not hurt anyone. $1 donation for each book sold is not enough to be criticizing each other. Life is too short. If you feel strongly about donating to Cancer research, then walk/run at their fundraisers or just send money to the organization itself.

Most importantly volunteer your time to talk to those who are going through any type of cancer trial. Don't be afraid. You job is to listen, console, and most importantly to provide hope through your love and faith in the future. I tell you two days ago, I spent 2 hours listening and talking to a friend about her heart disease. She asked me where I get my strength. I tell you as I tell her. I pointed straight up and said God. He is my strength. He is my hope. I tell you that love is the answer and brings peace of mind. I don't fear death for I know that God's love for me will carry me home to him. Once again a Christian group plays God and uses Christ for politics. As a Christian, I'm sad that so many "Christians" are following Deceivers and following this political rhetoric. Christ is big enough to handle peoples choices. He offers them a free gift and it doesn't require strings attached to how people should follow rules set by others. If these Christians had the faith of a mustard seed they would know Christ will suceed, Christ doesn't need them to lead, he needs them to follow.

I guess she has no problem with unplanned parenthood? Obviously Ms. Tyrrell does not use any contraception at all, from birth control pills, condoms to she or her significant other getting "fixed". For if she did that would be "planned parenthood" would it not? Relgious zealots never cease to amaze me. Get out of the 12 century!
