(CBS) Does creativity fuel dishonesty? A provocative new study suggests that folks who think outside-the-box are using their natural abilities to think of ways to cheat the system.

"Greater creativity helps individuals solve difficult tasks across many domains," lead researcher Dr. Francesca Gino, associate professor of business administration at Harvard University, said in a written statement. "But creative sparks may lead individuals to take unethical routes when searching for solutions to problems and tasks."

For the study, published in the Nov. 28 issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, researchers used establish psychological tests to determine the 99 participants' creativity and intelligence. The participants were paid a small sum for participating in the study, and were given several opportunities to earn extra cash.

For example, in one experiment, participants took a quiz and circled their answers on a piece of paper. Afterward, the experimenter told them to transfer their answers to "bubble sheets" - like the ones used on standardized tests - but the researcher told the group she had copied the wrong sheet and that the correct answers were lightly marked. The researcher also told participants they would be paid more for more correct answers and led them to believe they could transfer their answers without detection - even though the researchers uniquely marked each paper to know for sure what was originally written.

What happened? Creative types were significantly more likely to cheat.

In another experiment, participants were shown drawings with dots on each side of a diagonal line and were asked whether there were more dots on the left or right side. Participants were told they'd be paid 5 cents for each time they said there were more dots on the right side, and 0.5 cents for the left. Though in the majority of the trials it was virtually impossible to tell whether there were more dots on one side or the other, the creative participants were significantly more likely to pick the answer that paid more.

What makes creative people so cunning?

According to LiveScience, it's creative people's ability to rationalize their actions. The authors wrote, "Being able to generate several original justifications for one's own unethical actions thanks to creativity may lead people to feel licensed to cheat."

Creative folks: Do you use your creativity to cheat the system?

I feel insulted. I'm very creative (I'm the best in my art class, I write, I sing, dance, act, play the violin, etc) but never have I ever cheated on ANYTHING. I know every cheat code for Age of Empires 3 but have I ever used them? No. The other day, I watched a girl in my English class cheat on a Great Expectations test. She is not in the least creative, she's only seen as creative because of all the amazing work her friends do and give her to turn in. Does that mean I cheat more than her or that I think about cheating more than her then? I highly doubt it.

What you call cheating, others call thinking out of the box.

Was Kirk cheating when he solved the Kobayashi Maru?

Was Neo cheating when he stopped dodging the bullets?

Was Herman Cain cheating when he...

... oops!

Never mind.

Gee how much was spent on this study? It has always seems pretty obivious to me that the dolt in the bunch was never the one you needed to worry about. It was always the one that was curious about how everything worked that you needed to keep an eye on!

I never trusted honest people. They're such insufferable, namby-pambies. They contribute nothing to the world, and they bore us with tales of their stunted morality. They are lazy. They are stupid. They are naive. It doesn't surprise me they lack intelligence or creativity.

Correlation does not equal causation. Pretty crappy study with no factual basis.

lol antoniof123:

Dude did you ever learn grammar and punctuation in school? No, you attended a maybe a day of school; you didn't attend even 3,000 days in school, did you?

Of course not. Like all nuts, you just spout off at the mouth without any punctuation, just words.

Take a breather. Relax. Lay off the coffee and take some anger management classes.

I want to pull the ******** card. I work as a photographer in my one job, and a graphic artist as my other job. All my co-workers would tell you I am the most truthful person there is. Creativity does not fuel the desire to earn more money that test was based on greed. If you really wanted more money you would lie and do everything you can to gain more money. The article never explained what kind of creative people they also used. Was it writers of fiction novels, painters, etc.

To state someone is creative is to basically point the finger at everyone. We all are creative in our own ways. Some people can use it on command where others have to work hard to use it. But the more we use creativity the more easy it is to call it up on demand.

Creativity does not just limit it to art, it can be to engineering, could be science, it could be using a math equation to figure out something that was science fiction.

This test was a waste of grant money, how about giving me grants so I can help feed the homeless or improve my business. Not waste money on stupid illogical notions.

100% agreed.

I too am in photography, web design, Information Systems, etc...

Most of the people who do cheat are marketers. Especially the most successful ones. They will use psychology into making people feel they want things so much... or will do unethical or immoral things, even if they are not illegal...

Ditto. I am very artistic (comics, animation, videogames, compositions) and creative in other ways (really good at problem solving, fixing and figuring things out such as computer hardware and software and mechanical and other electronic equipment etc...) and I would never in my wildest dreams cheat on my boyfriend. I've been with and lived with him for more than 4 years and it makes me sick to think about us being seperated. Now, creative people may have the power to manipulate others (I'm very good at getting even the meanest grump to love being around me) but the truly creative also understand people a lot better and would rather use that understanding to help others, not take advantage of them. To be creative is to see the world in a way others don't, to see and understand all of the connections and possibilities in the world around us without the need for drugs and use that creative knowledge to help better humanity. That definitely doesn't include cheating. If you cheat, you're showing a lack of creativity and proving that you have severe personal issues. Creativity isn't just about being able to play music or write a poem, it's a mindset, a way of life, and a philosophy. Just because you can draw a butterfly better than someone else, it doesn't make you creative if all you do is draw butterflies -- oh, and cheat on your significant other.
