Halloween licorice could cause heart trouble, FDA warns

black licorice, FDA FDA

(CBS) Happy Halloween, candy-lovers! Each year dentists warn parents not let their kids eat too much candy, but a new warning from the FDA is aimed directly at parents:

Eating too much black licorice can kill you.

Adults over 40 can overdose if they eat more than two ounces of black licorice per day for at least two weeks, the FDA warned in a statement. It's preaching a message of moderation for lovers of the classic candy - kids as well as adults.

Black licorice contains glycyrrhizin, a sweetening compound that can cause the body's potassium levels to plummet. A potassium drop can lead to an irregular heart rhythm, high blood pressure, and sometimes heart failure.

The agency also warned black licorice can interact with some medications and supplements, and to check with a doctor before snacking. Licorice might decrease the anticoagulant drug Warfarin's effectiveness, and may interfere with estrogen hormone pills, diuretics, and steroids like prednisone, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Linda Katz, director of cosmetics and colors at the FDA, said last year the agency received a report of a licorice lover who had many health issues from eating the candy, while other studies have linked black licorice to health problems in adults, or those with a history of heart disease and high blood pressure. Katz said once you stop eating licorice, potassium levels restore to normal with no permanent health problems.

If you have been eating a lot of black licorice and are experiencing an irregular heartbeat, stop eating it immediately and contact a doctor.

I sent an email to Hersheys (makers of Twizzlers licorice).
Hersheys replied to my querry concerning licorice hazards. A portion of their reply stated:

"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has set a maximum limit of 3.1% glycyrrhizin in soft candy (which includes licorice candy.) The amount of licorice extract and glycyrrhizin in our products is proprietary information and will vary among our products. The glycyrrhizin levels are well below FDA's maximum limits."

If the FDA sets the allowed limits, why does the FDA consider it necessary to issue a warning?

What this does not specifically mention is that this compound is only found in European-style black licorice, which I can all but guarantee will not be in anyone's candy bowl this Halloween. Licorice flavor that most Americans eat in their candy and anything by Twizzlers is quite safe.

Just one more instance supporting the contention that the FDA needs to be downsized dramatically.

All things in moderation. Too much milk is bad, too much water is bad, too much vitamin D is bad, too much vitamin E is bad, too much of anything is not good for you. Too much (fill in the blank) is bad.

But when it comes to licorice and Halloween candy, I've never seen anyone give that out. Giving out black licorice to kids is an invitation to an egging.

There seems to be no gray area when it comes to licorice. You either love it or you can't even stand the smell of it.
