(CBS) Do gay doctors pose a threat to hospitalized kids? Linda Harvey apparently thinks so. On a recent broadcast, the conservative Christian radio host urged parents to "think long and hard" about whether kids should be cared for by hospital workers who "proclaim a homosexual lifestyle."

To make her point, Harvey offered isteners a scenario: "Let's say your 11-year-old has broken her leg rather badly and needs to be in the hospital a few days. Which would you prefer - a nurse who's proud of her lesbianism, who has rainbow identifiers on her work clothing, or a nurse who does not?"

Just who is Linda Harvey? She's a Columbus, Ohio-based former executive of Ohio State University Hospitals and the founder of a "Christian pro-family organization" called Mission:America, according to the organization's website.

On the Oct. 18 broadcast, Harvey acknowledged that gay health-care workers can be competent and might be the best bet in a medical emergency. But she urged parents to pick a pediatrician very carefully. In addition, she said parents should consider writing a letter to the pediatrician saying that if a child must be hospitalized, then he/she will not be treated by gay workers.

"For routine in-hospital care where contact with your child would be required," she continued, "your values should be respected."

But the values expressed in Harvey's comments didn't get a lot of respect from some medical experts.

"Sexual orientation, gender identity and other personal characteristics do not determine a healthcare provider's competence," Dr. Desi Bailey, president of the Gay & Lesbian Medical Association, told CBS News in an email. She cited a 2005 Gallup poll that found that 78% of Americans believe lesbians and gay men should be hired as doctors.

As for rainbow pins, Dr. Bailey said they help foster a welcoming environment for healthcare workers, adding, "A welcoming environment improves the quality of healthcare for all patients."

What does the medical establishment have to say?

"The American Medical Association has zero tolerance for discrimination in any form," the association's president, Dr. Peter W. Carmel, told CBS News in an email. "Respecting the diversity of patients and the physicians who care for them is a fundamental value of the medical profession."

What do you think? Should parents be able to keep gay hospital workers away from kids? Or is Harvey out of step?

You are born gay it is not a choice..( life is already difficult enough!) . This behavior is seen in other species as well as in humans,1500 species, to be precise. Gays do no harm...they hurt no one . The bible we have to remember was after all written by men....a higher being would be too wise and never be that judgmental and cruel..to condone a hatred for gays .

It is an actual inherited gene that creates an inability to be interested in the opposite sex. ...just like me and others who are not gay are not interested in our own sex. It is a gene that does not work for procreation purposes...but it runs in families as it is a
recessive gene
It does no harm to others.

Why does this woman get air-time? Who is the editor at CBS that thought this newsworthy? My teenager could do a better job at judging news worthiness.

Did she also include any notes requesting that the hypothetical eleven year old girl should not be treated by heterosexual men except in an emergency?

It is not a hospital's job to help bigots ensure that their children never encounter homosexuals, and it's likely to be bad for EVERYONE'S care if they're shuffling staff around based on lunatic ideological demands instead of actual staff abilities and specializations.

This reminds me of when I was a kid and seeing that old pig Falwell on Phil Donahue. Stop giving these people air time. And don't tell me "what God said" because you really don't have a clue.

I find it embarrassing to call myself a "Christian" when I see/hear things like this. Maybe I was sick from Sunday School when we were supposed study Jesus' "Hate All ****'s" Parable. The irony of these people is that they are doing the exact same thing to Christianity as their Muslim extremist counterparts... they are perverting and disgracing it. It makes me sick. I don't care what anyone's sexual preference/orientation is, and if they are a doctor, all I care about is that they know what they're doing. End of story.

Which would you prefer: a nurse who is proud of her heterosexuality and wears a an "protect unborn babies pin" but does not care about them after they are born when they do not have health insurance or a nurse who does not.

I'm still trying to figure out the part about the "identifying pins" she seems to think gay people are required to wear in the hospital setting. Since I've never heard of any such "requirement" either I'm out of touch (BTW this identifying pin thingy doesn't happen in the hospital in the town in which I live) or this woman is stark raving crazy.

Uh, I'm still failing to see the part where a gay doctor could "harm" my child... This woman needs to go back in her box.

I'm wondering how such a narrow-minded bigot came to be a highly-placed administrator in the Ohio State University Hospital system. I work at a teaching hospital connected to a major land-grant (public) university, and there is total zero tolerance for any kind of bigotry, discrimination, and hate-mongering.

Maybe it's a good idea to boycott Linda Harvey (don't listen to her babbling and ranting on the radio) and maybe steer clear of OSU Hospital.

To all the dedicated health care professionals out there -- I apologize for this woman's nasty attitude. Please remember she is the one with the problem.

What's this nasty piece of work going to do when doctors refuse to treat her or her family?

=============================

They wouldn't refuse to treat her. That's the irony of the whole situation.
