(CBS/AP) SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Is medical marijuana going mainstream?

On Saturday, a cavernous 10,000-aquare-foot pot emporium is set to open here, and in coming months the company behind it plans to open similar stores in Arizona, Colorado, New Jersey, and Oregon.

The new weGrow store - which wags have dubbed the "Wal-Mart of Weed" - isn't selling weed. It's offering up how-to experts and merchandise to help medical marijuana patients grow pot hydroponically.

The Sacramento Bee says the enterprise started in Oakland last year as a warehouse store called iGrow.

In the past, hydroponics outlets have avoided any mention of marijuana because pot cultivation is illegal under federal law. But hydroponics stores have exploded as states approve medical marijuana use.

Fifteen states now allow the use of marijuana for pain relief, nausea, and loss of appetite by people with debilitating diseases like AIDS and cancer, according to the New York Times.

Given the federal government's opposition to decriminalizing pot, what should patrons of the weGrow store be called?

Smart shoppers? Or scofflaws?

What's your opinion?

I can't believe that the sale of marijuana is legal here when the hardcore prisioners have told people that they started with marijuana and it leads to stronger drugs. Are we trying to get people hooked on drugs here, or are we just that dumb and niaeve?

You are badly misinformed. Your words seem to come straight from the Drug Czar's propaganda handbook! Marijuana does not cause anyone to go onto stronger drugs. If someone does, it is their choice. It is not because the marijuana made them do it. Get a clue before you post this kind of idiotic garbage!

I agree with dgmeansit 100%! If you doubt that marijuana is good medicine, Google: Granny Storm Crow's List, it's more like a library than a list!

In ADDITION to being a great medicine, marijuana is a great recreational drug, FAR safer than alcohol in every way. Since alcohol is legal, marijuana should be too!

Why is the most useful plant known illegal? It's illegal because crooked corporations that buy crooked politicians fear competition from superior, safer and more environmentally friendly hemp products and because the Government loves to oppress jail and steal from the people! Alcohol, tobacco, petroleum, cotton, timber, chemical and pharmaceutical companies, just to name a few, all see marijuana as unwanted competition. The best way for We The People to regain our Constitutional rights and liberties is to demand a complete ban on corporate lobbying. We are supposed to have Government of, for and by THE PEOPLE, not of, for and by corporations! Corporations are NOT people!

Marijuana does not cause aggressive behavior. Marijuana does not cause dangerous driving. Marijuana does not cause cancer, brain damage or any serious health problems. Marijuana prohibition does not keep kids away from marijuana, illegal dealers don't ask for ID. Marijuana is not a "gateway drug", there is absolutely NOTHING about marijuana that causes people to use other drugs. Marijuana is not addictive. In fact marijuana is one of the safest substances known! Marijuana is SAFER than many foods we consume and give to our kids all the time! Exactly what good is this prohibition doing and who is benefiting from it?

When was the last time you heard of the cops being called to break up a fight at a marijuana party? NEVER! When was the last time you heard about a marijuana consumer beating his wife? NEVER! The cops and the politicians know marijuana is no threat to society but they keep screaming their fear mongering marijuana lies at every opportunity. Did you ever wonder why?

What % of marijuana consumers beat their wife because of the effects of marijuana? What % of marijuana consumers go to a marijuana party and end up in a fight? What % of marijuana consumers get in a drunken stupor and spend the night in a gutter? What % of marijuana consumers pass out and stay right where they fell long after they soil their pants? What % of marijuana consumers end up choking to death on their own vomit? Exactly 0% ! Marijuana is no different than alcohol? Who are you kidding? No one that knows the truth!

Legalize marijuana and stop funding criminals, gangsters, illegal aliens and terrorists with hundreds of Billions of $ every year. "When you fund something you get more of it." ~Ron Paul. Does anyone really think we need more criminals, gangsters, illegal aliens and terrorists?

Why should a substance that is far SAFER than aspirin ONLY be legal for those that have a serious ailment? Why should people be forced to use FDA approved poisons instead of a far safer more effective natural plant? Why should a plant that is SAFER than potatoes be regulated and taxed as if it was as dangerous as alcohol? Eating a couple of raw potatoes can give you a toxic reaction but marijuana is nontoxic. Why should people have their kids taken away from them when nontoxic marijuana is found in their home while far more harmful, even deadly substances are all over the house? Why should anyone be concerned about people using NONTOXIC marijuana when they have hundreds of far more dangerous and often deadly LEGAL substances under their kitchen sink, in their kitchen cabinets, in their medicine cabinets and in their garage? If adults can use those dangerous, even deadly substances safely, does any logical person really think they can't use NONTOXIC marijuana safely and keep their kids safe without Government being involved or a Rx from a Dr? Marijuana is one of the SAFEST and most beneficial substances known to mankind!

No matter where you stand on the issue of legalizing marijuana everyone should read:
MARIJUANA AND HEMP THE UNTOLD STORY, Thomas J. Bouril, WHY IS MARIJUANA ILLEGAL, Pete Guither and the free online book: The Emperor Wears No Clothes, The Authoritative Historical Record of Cannabis and The Conspiracy Against Marijuana. Click the links to those titles on this webpage:

If you think marijuana prohibition has anything to do with the imaginary, false, fabricated, alleged harms of using marijuana as a recreational drug, YOU HAVE BEEN DUPED!

Regardless of Government intervention, truth is still truth. Freedom of religion has been argued for years, and here is a case example: If the Church can use a "dangerous drug" called alcohol for "communion with the Holy Spirit", why has the Supreme Court refused to allow people to join in circles smoking pot for a common communion? Besides, it's much less dangerous than alcohol.

At the web's "Healing News Network" we research all the latest as well as timeless remedies to reverse the deleterious effects of illness, and marijuana has been proven to help much better than dangerous chemical drugs in countless cases. As a food, hemp seeds are an amazing source of nutrient, as well as fibers used to make clothing, etc.

It would serve interests of business, commerce, and law enforcement to totally decriminalize marijuana, as history has proven people are going to use it regardless. The vast majority of users are not hurting others. It's those, like the Mexican Cartels and other mobsters that profit the most by keeping it illegal, while law enforcement officers misdirect their budgets and services to bust otherwise innocent people while too many "illegals" as well as "Wall Street big boys" get away with much bigger crimes, since FBI, CIA, and other police use valuable resources to combat a simple green plant!!!...???

Wouldn't it be much safer and effective to simply regulate, tax, and license marijuana growing in a similar way to tobacco, turning over regulation to the Bureau of Tobacco, Alcohol and Firearms to regulate its cultivation and distribution? This way Government can financially benefit from its use, while redirecting our budgets much more effectively.

I could not possible agree more with your statements. If only our Govt would listen to us on this issue. I've written them many times only to get a canned response against legalizing... I'm sure many of them are bought and paid for by Big Pharma. It's really sad too! None of us ever voted in the people who run Big Pharma but on this issue, it seems that they, and their wagons full of money, seem to be calling the shots. They don't want the competition from a plant anyone can grow. On the other hand, they are more than happy to isolate various compounds, patent them, and then sell them to us legally... Truly, I Hate Them!

Legalize it, tax it. Eliminate the deadly criminal Mexican cartel isto's. People will smoke this crap no matter whether it's illegal or legal. The US gov't could not impose alcohol prohibition on the population and they cannot prohibit pot. I don't smoke the crap but I don't care if other's smoke it in their living rooms. There are so many people's lives that have been ruined by the pot Nazi's of the US gov't it's ridiculous.

Crap is a word I would use to describe the thinking ability of most prohibitionists. The "crap" you refer to is one of the most remarkable plants on this planet and it's myriad uses are only now being discovered - in spite of the Govt's attempts to keep it hidden at all costs...

Clearly you don't like it, but I respect that you realize people shouldn't be treated like criminals because of the choice to use it!

We need far less regulation, far more competition will drastically cut prices of the medicine while proving a amazing potential to be taxed.

If industry did not have their hands tied the price of field grown marijuana would be around 10 dollars an ounce- you could tack on a 2000% tax and it would still be affordable medicine at under half the current price.

Marijuana is already part of mainstream medicine. If you doubt this, spend some time on the "Patients Out of Time" web site at: http://www.medicalcannabis.com/

Or consider Time magazine's recent estimate that over 300,000 American patients are using marijuana with their doctor's recommendation in the states that permit it. Tens of thousands of physicians have recommended marijuana for these patients and scores of legitimate health care organizations support immediate safe and legal access for patients who can benefit from it.

Yet the federal government stubbornly and absurdly insists that there are no accepted medical uses for marijuana in the U.S. and that it is unsafe for use even under medical supervision. This Big Lie cannot continue to exist much longer. Truth will out.
