Women in Dismay Over o.b. Tampon Shortage

(CBS) Updated Dec. 28, 2010

NEW YORK - I have been a loyal user of o.b. Tampons for years. They're small, compact and don't require an applicator. With my heavy monthly flow, their o.b. Ultra variety was a godsend at the beginning of my periods, being the only tampon on the market that I've come across that could handle it.

Imagine my dismay when I read on the women's blog Jezebel in early November that o.b. had discontinued its Ultra tampons. I planned to raid drugstores to buy any remaining boxes of my preferred o.b. Ultra, but that proved fruitless when I discovered that every one of the four drugstores between my office and the subway station was completely out of ALL o.b. tampons, not just o.b. Ultra.

I quickly did a Google search once I returned home and found that the New York Times blogged about the shortage, and that it wasn't just the four drugstores near my office that were out of o.b. tampons, but that store shelves from San Diego to Boston are also missing o.b. tampons.

The shortage is reminiscent of when the Today Sponge was discontinued in 1995, forever immortalized in an episode of "Seinfeld" that year where Elaine frantically wanders New York in search of a pharmacy carrying the contraceptive device, only to find that most were sold out. Today put the product back on the U.S. market in 2005 after many delays.

Across the web, most online retailers that once sold o.b. are all out, and on eBay, an auction for four boxes of o.b. Ultra tampons closed at $142.50 after 31 bids - that's about $32.63 per box, approximately four times the average retail price of about $8 for a 40-pack. An auction for seven boxes goes for $120 to "buy it now". On o.b.'s website, a click on the "buy now" link brings you to the K-YShopdirect.com website with a message that reads that the page cannot be found.

Female loyalists of the product are outraged, creating online petitions and venting on Write the Company.

A spokesperson from o.b.'s parent company, McNeil-PPC, a unit of Johnson & Johnson, sent the following statement via e-mail:

"o.b. tampons experienced a temporary supply interruption that has resulted in some stores being out of stock. We are working hard to bring supply back in line with demand and expect these stores to be restocked soon. We apologize to o.b. customers who may have been inconvenienced."

Could the shortage possibly be related to cases of toxic shock syndrome, a potentially fatal illness sometimes caused by tampon use? I once witnessed a friend go through TSS after forgetting to remove a tampon. She could barely walk and ended up in the hopsital for a few a days. Thankfully, the F.D.A. regulates tampon production to prevent women from getting TSS.

The New York Times speculates that the disappearance could have been caused by a handful of consumer reports in the F.D.A. database, including one that read:

"Consumer saw her physician and was prescribed medication for a vaginal infection. After one day of treatment, a 'ball of tampon threads was released from the uterus,'" the report said. "The consumer reported that the physician suspected that the ball consisted of 'little pieces of tampon from over a period of time.' "

A spokeswoman for the F.D.A. told the New York Times that the agency was "not aware of any quality control or manufacturing issues with o.b. tampons."

The o.b. spokesperson was adamant that the company did not discontinue o.b. Ultra due to an adverse event related to the product when asked about the discontinuation of Ultra tampons:

"The Ultra product line was discontinued in late September. There have been no unusual reports of adverse events related to Ultra and the decision to discontinue was not based on any adverse events."

When asked about the reason for the discontinuation or if the Ultra product line would be back on the market, the spokesperson vaguely replied, "We have no further comments at this time."

While reports say that the lack of o.b. tampons and discontinuation of o.b. Ultra tampons are temporary, hopefully it won't take ten years to come back like it did with the Today Sponge. Whatever the reason is, until o.b. tampons reappear on drugstore shelves, I'm going to try to make my remaining o.b. tampons last.

By the way, the drug....I forgot to mention the name of it. It's called Lysteda. You may have even seen it advertised... And folks, I'm not mad at Erin318, might have sounded like it, but I'm not... I'm mad as hell at Johnson & Johnson and McNeil, but not Erin... I'm sure she's an awesome lady! It's just that, well.... a menstrual cup? Ewwww!! Yuck! Sorry.....

@erin318 WOW! I am almost speechless! That NEVER happens!!! (ask ANYBODY that knows me...) Yeah so, I can not believe either that ANYONE in their right mind would pay $32.63 for a box of tampons! Not EVEN if they were lined in gold, which I'm pretty sure would defeat the purpose! THAT being said,..."Hopefully the OB shortage will lead to more women using menstrual cups."... SERIOUSLY!!!! I WILL NEVER USE A MENSTRUAL CUP!!!!!!!!!! EVER!!!!! I think that is just one of the nastiest things that I've EVER heard of.....Not to get to personal here, but YOUR monthly flow must not be very heavy! My thank God, has slowed down over the years, but when I was younger, taking out a cup would have been like blowing the side of the levee on the Mississippi!!! It would have been disgusting!!! And no I don't have a problem with blood and such either, I actually have a medical background! They also strike me as being potentially more unsanitary than tampons! Yeah, sure they might be better for the environment, and I'm ALL for that, MOST of the time, but NOT this time! I'm thrilled for you that you found something else that you like at LEAST as well and sounds like even better than tampons but oh no! NOT ME! I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ANGRY at Johnson & Johnson right now I could just scream! There is no shortage of OB tampons....NOT IN MY AREA ANYWAY! They have quit making the ULTRA and have NO INTENTIONS of bringing it back! Instead the parent company is pushing for women with heavier periods to take their NEW DRUG! THAT'S WHY THEY DISCONTINUED THEIR ULTRAS!!!! NO OTHER REASON!!! You can still get the ultras in Germany... Did you guys know that? The new drug isn't available there!!! Take the new drug...reduce your flow!!! You only have to take 6 FREAKING PILLS A DAY!!!!!!!!! I won't even go into the disgusting side effects of the pill! WAKE UP WOMEN EVERY WHERE!!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS!! I WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER PRODUCT FROM THIS COMPANY UNTIL THEY COME CLEAN AND STRAIGHTEN UP THEIR MESS!!!!!!!!!!! IT'S NOT ABOUT FREAKING TAMPONS....IT'S ABOUT LINING THEIR DAMN POCKETS WITH MONEY!!!! THE DAMN PILLS ARE ON AVERAGE ABOUT $5.50/PILL. YOU TAKE 6 A DAY FOR UP TO 5 DAYS. ALMOST/ABOUT $160/MONTH. AND A BOX OF ULTRA TAMPONS WAS ON AVERAGE $8? DO THE MATH! THE FDA APPROVED THE DRUG, THE ULTRA TAMPONS CAME OFF THE SHELF!!!!!!!! I WILL NOT BE USED AND BE QUIET ABOUT IT!!!!

PLEASE bring bag the Ultra OB Tampon to Canada too!

You have know idea how this will affect women like myself.
2 days a month, even with the ultra and a panti-liner, I am on the toilet every hour on the hour and sometimes more frequent.
I don't know how I am going to be able to work or do anything on those days now.
I am an extremely fit and healthy women. I do not want to have to resort to surgery, but unless the Ultra or something else comparable is available to me, I may have no choice.

I have used OB's for 35 years. Now I have to resort to using tampons with applicators. To begin with, they are extremely non-environmental. Secondly, everyone is talking about ultras, and It is not just ultras, but all sizes that disappeared. It is the other companies that should be making them more like OB's. They are easier to use, and less destructive to the environment. Too much plastic. I have to say, thanks a lot Johnson and Johnson for making me feel like I was 13 again, learning how to use something completely foreign to me.

These are very comparable to ob's. more expensive - but expand sideways and work just as well.

@ksc333 i agree with you, it's time to break the habbit. i feel like people become way too attached to the specific brands of tampons/pads they use and that's how only like four companies monopolize the market...which i think is absurd. i still like the idea of using a non-applicator tampon though. i came across these tampons called maxim when i was doing some serious googling and they're actually sold at this store by my house. they have really good non applicator tampons so i was happy. also, they're organic which is pretty cool. anyways, this shows you where to buy them: http://www.maximhy.com/newsite/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=101&Itemid=41 hope it helps!

100 Years ago they may have slapped a rag between their legs. We couldn't vote then either. O.B. Ultra was the only effective tampon on the market for a significant group of women. I'm voting now. I'm voting with my dollars by not buying a single thing from Johnson & Johnson's significant list of brands. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnson_&_Johnson
If I'm expected to sit around in some idiotic state of Victorian distress, you better believe I won't be supporting the jerks who forced it upon me.

I haven't seen this many ignorant comments in a long time.I too have been using the now discontinued product for 28 years and I am shocked to see it gone from the shelves. elifritz2000 I am sorry about your daughter, but I can't help but wonder how often she changed her plug.Yes,magnumdr, it probabaly wasn't an issue 75 years ago when women slapped a rag between their legs and covered it up with giant grandma skirts and sat at home waiting for the husband to come home. Today's women don't have the luxury to sit at home; we work without big skirts to cover up that you are wearing a diaper basically, letting the world know you on your period. Why don't you try it for one day and get back to me. Wing or no wing.. go for it!
None of the other American products are comparable to OB as they expand leghtwise thus leak, become too long and slide out no matter how small or big you use. Uncomfortable and not reliable. I could deal with the fact I must change 28 years of habbits, IF there was something to replace it with. Maybe I go through my Granny's closet... perhaps she saved something from her grandmother I could wear during those days.

I can't believe people would pay $32.63 for a box of tampons! A menstrual cup such as the Diva Cup is about $25 and will last for years. There is zero risk of TSS since is doesn't absorb, it doesn't contain toxic chemicals like tampons and pads and is better for the environment! Hopefully the OB shortage will lead to more women using menstrual cups.
