Tobacco Smoking Should Be Banned in Apartments: Researchers

(CBS) Smokers who have been forced out of bars and restaurants may soon be crowded into little groups outside one more place: their homes.

A new study finds that even when kids live with non-smoking parents, if they live in apartment buildings they are exposed to tobacco smoke from their neighbors. Now, researchers are recommending that owners and landlords make their buildings smoke-free zones.

The deadly smoke seeps through walls or common air ducts from smokers' apartments, according to the study published today in Pediatrics.

"Parents try so hard to protect their children from dangers, such as tobacco smoke." said Dr. Karen Wilson, an author of the study and assistant professor of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center's Golisano Children's Hospital, said in a written statement.

"It's surprising to see these results and realize that too many parents have no control over whether their children are exposed to secondhand smoke in their own homes," she said.

Children are in danger of a number of health problems if they are exposed to cigarette smoke. The U.S. Surgeon General says there is no safe level of exposure to tobacco smoke. In children, tobacco smoke causes and increases the severity of asthma, influenza and bronchiolitis, a lung infection primarily found in kids.

It can also cause sudden death syndrome and cognitive deficits in infants. And even unborn children are at risk: if pregnant women inhale tobacco smoke, their child may be born with low birth weight or prematurely.

The solution? The true fix to protect residents is to make apartment housing smoke-free, says Dr. Jonathan Winickoff, senior study author who practices at the MassGeneral Hospital for Children.

"A child with asthma has no choice, people who smoke can go outside," he said. "I think that landlords and building owners will now be deciding how soon to go smoke free and not whether to go smoke free. I don't think anyone wants to be the slumlord of the last building to allow smoking inside."

This article brought to you by those in favor of texting while driving a car.
The evil smoke is coming out of your brain in illogical words of fear based horse apples.
It would serve much better to ban cheeze. It clogs your system keeping consumers of fermented milk "full of it" way longer than the recomended evacuation time.
Maybe ban beans, the foul odor that passes within hours of consumption is really hurting the earths ozone. But, first on the list of things needing banning is these edumacated dorks telling people what they need to be doing to make the world healthier. Possibly the people will listen if the voice is from a perfect human. Even then people will find their own way. There are no modern day prophets...the world is too corrupt to even listen.

If smoking should be banned in appartments then so should insence, perfume, frying foods, having pets, diaper buckets, should I go on. This whole world has picked on smokers just because of the smell and the smoke free groups that post propaganda about cigarette smokers. When is the World going to treat smokers like we have the same rights as does anyone else. Smokers have been totally harassed by the smoke free groups and those that believe their nonsecnce!!!!

All the whiners and cry babies of the world need to shut up. All the non smoking do gooders of the world sure don't complain about the taxes we smokers pay whenever we buy a pack.

Hey, while we're at this "make all the world healthy and happy" mode, let's outlaw all foods that contain any sort of fat, motor vehicles, and anything else that could even possibly be construed as even remotely bad for you. No matter what we do, ain't none of us leavin' this world alive.

If you only killed yourself, we would be cool with it :)

Mr\MS Friend, I agree with you 100%. Anyone who is not upset about our liberties being taken from us must love to be controlled and control. I can't wait for the day when they are told that something they do poses a health risk and that action will have to stop. I do not understand anyone who is happy when other's lifestyles are taken away.

This is just more BS. No concrete proof second hand smoke will kill anyone. People don't like the smell. Bottom line. I don't like the smell of car or truck exhaust and that is proven deadly but more people drive than smoke.

Actually, there is concrete proof. In recent years, studies have been done in places where smoking in public places was banned. Guess what? The rate of heart attacks declined significantly in every single place the following year, NON SMOKERS INCLUDED.

Originally, WHO (World Health Organization-one of the most liberal of medical communities) said there is no SECOND HAND SMOKE. The control freaks must've done a Jesse Jackson on them.

Let's go full on nanny-state and ban everything that's considered a poisonous product that injures and kills millions around the globe every year.

Yeah.. Let's ban alcohol. Let's ban bacon, red meat and most packaged foods. They all contain (or are) products that some folks consider to be that level of dangerous.

That way we can live on bread and water. Oh wait - there could be poisons in the bread...

See, the difference is that you can kill yourself eating red meat without affecting the health of others. So, your choice. However, your second hand smoke DOES has the potential to affect the health of others. Quite simple, actually.

then i suppose i can't use any solvents ... or start my car ... or buy any new furniture (outgas) ... or take the bus?

if you don't want your health affected by the actions of others ... pack your bags and move away from others ... maybe into the woods. just make sure you don't let any of the leaves decay ... they produce methane ... which may not be good for you.

When you're moving to that home far from civilization make sure you're not burning bio fuels. The dangers of wood fires and campfires far exceed anything you'll ever get from SHS.
