(CBS) When it comes to graphic cigarette warning labels, the U.S. is late to the game.

Other countries have long required cigarette packages to bear images showing smoking's horrific effects on the body.

And some are a bit more disturbing than the corpses and diseased lungs featured in the warning labels just released by the FDA . Those labels have outraged some, including quite a few who have posted comments on the CBS News website.

Brazil's cigarette warning labels are among the world's most graphic. They include images of dead babies, scarred corpses, and a gangrenous foot.

Yuck.

But Dr. David Hammond, professor of health studies at the University of Waterloo and an expert on cigarette warning labels, says Brazil's labels are powerful deterrents to smoking. Statistics seem to back him up: according to a Brazilian government website, smoking among adults in Brazil dropped from 35 percent in 1989 to 22 percent in 2003.

So he's not just blowing smoke.
