(CBS) Fans of Drew Carey know that the "Price is Right" host lost a lot of weight in recent months, dropping a whopping 80 pounds since January.

But some audience members were astounded to see his amazing metamorphosis when the show's 2010 season kicked off today.

According to People magazine, Carey, 52 went from a size 44 pants to a 33-34. And he did it the old-fashioned way - diet and exercise.

He cut back on simple carbs, snacked on fruit, and drank lots of water.

He also hit the gym, doing cardio for at least 45 minutes a day, according to the magazine.

Not only did he lose weight, he lost his type-2 diabetes. "I'm not diabetic anymore," he told the magazine. "No medication needed."

"It sucks being fat, you know," he said last Wednesday at a party in Beverly Hills.

"I like being skinny," said Carey. "I was sick of being fat on the camera. Really, I just got sick of it. Once I started losing weight, again, like once I started dropping a couple pant sizes, then it was easy 'cause once you see the results, then you don't wanna stop."

When people are insulin resistant, their muscle, fat, and liver cells do not respond properly to insulin. As a result, their bodies need more insulin to help glucose enter cells. The pancreas tries to keep up with this increased demand for insulin by producing more. Eventually, the pancreas fails to keep up with the body?s need for insulin. Excess glucose builds up in the bloodstream, setting the stage for diabetes. It's like a drug -- you can build up a tolerance. And what leads to "Insulin Resistance" and Type II Diabetes? Spiking your blood sugar by eating too many sugars and starches, getting obese and not exercising. Having that candy bar and a pop for a quick lunch. What can cure "Insulin Resistance"? Cutting out those processed foods, sugars and refined carbohydrates. Eating more animal fats and protein, fasting between meals. Our ancestors were lucky if they ate a good meal every two or three days. You do not need to stuff something in your mouth every time you think you might have a hunger pang -- your body has reserves to go 24 to 48 hours with nothing but water.

He looks good! I maintain my weight at 185, 6' tall and 61 years old mainly by diet. Exercise only makes me hungry, but I still exercise just for health reasons. I eat mainly meat & eggs.

"Pig" no more. Good for him.

I didn't recognize Peter Jackson the first time I saw him after the weight loss, laser eye surgery, and shave.

I don't believe Carey for one microsecond. He's had surgery. Bariatric surgery is well known to cure type 2 diabetes and you don't just transform as he did without drugs or surgery. He's doing a disservice to all by lying about it. For one thing, it perpetuates the myth that obesity is a will power/laziness issue. For another, it dissuades those that need the surgery from seeking it. Just wait. In a year or less, he'll own up to gastric bypass. Sure, he changed his diet and exercised. But it would have been for naught without the surgery.

Oh get over it!! Some people do actually belive in working out and eating right. I myself have lost 50 pound by old fashioned eating right and getting active. So....get your facts straight...it CAN be done without surgery!

You realize that Carey is a veteran Marine and that he hasn't always been obese, right? The way he looks now is the way he looked years ago. And it's definitely possible to lose weight the old fashioned way. Sure, it's true that obesity isn't always a willpower/laziness issue, but it's just as true that sometimes it is. When I finished bootcamp I weighed 175. I've been out of the military for several years now. A few months back when I hit 316 at the doctors office I said enough is enough and now I'm down to 275 after just a few months of exercise and diet control. It's possible people, and it should be tried before the surgery cop-out is.

PS - If you don't believe me about Drew, there are pictures on the net, one on his wiki article. He's an old jarhead from Cleveland, just like me.
