(CBS) A massive egg recall has consumers scrambling to check their pantries for eggs that might be contaminated with salmonella.

The recall involves 228 million eggs produced in Galt, Iowa by Wright County Egg, and distributed to wholesalers and food service companies nationwide.

The recall affects eggs sold under the following brands: Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph's, Boomsma's, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms, and Kemps.

If you have suspect eggs, check the dates and codes stamped on the end of the carton.

The plant numbers affected are P-1026, P-1413, and P-1946. The dates (recorded in the "Julian format") range from 136 to 225, according to a statement by the Egg Safety Center. For example, eggs in a carton marked with the number P-1026 137 should not be eaten.

Consumers who have suspicious eggs can get a refund if they return them in their original carton to the store where they were bought.

"This recall is of shell eggs only. Other egg products produced by Wright County Eggs are not affected," the company said in a statement.

Minnesota health officials say seven salmonella cases in two restaurant outbreaks have been linked to Wright County Egg in May and July.

We haven't eaten eggs from the grocery store in over two years now. We have four backyard hens. Clean, friendly animals that supply our house with organic eggs. I find the timing for the egg recall to be uncanny. My book CLUCKED - The Tale of Pickin Chicken was just released on Amazon last month. It tells, through the eyes of the chicken, the unsanitary conditions factory farm chickens live in. http://www.**********/Clucked-Chicken-Gregory-Lee-White/dp/1453715347/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1282834650&sr=8-1

I'm a vegan and this reminds me of the tragic spinach recall of '06. It's hard to go without a food that you depend on for your nutrition.

Condolences to those who have gotten sick, bought recalled products, and are missing having eggs as part of their diet.

Ive been affected by this a couple times before hearing about this recall. I really just thought i was getting allergic reaction or something to them cause i suffered from most of the symptoms right after eating it.

Am i supposed to report it? on the tv news the lady said "And see where to report this, right after this [commercial] break" but i didnt see anything.

Now I could be wrong, because I didn't read this entire article because of the retarded intro about eggs in the pantrie, but I think whats going on with these eggs is an inbalanced level of salmonella. I know and understand the raw egg concept, I did pass biology with flying colors. If there's not a natural balanced ratio of salmonella to egg it may not be able to be cooked out.

Remember, there are almost 300 million hens out there each producing about an egg a day. Billions of eggs are eaten around the world daily, and many people depend on them for their daily nutrition. Eggs contain the most digestible protein available in nature. I wouldn?t recommend eating raw eggs, raw pork, or drink un-pastuerized milk. In fact no one since Rocky Balboa has actually eaten a raw egg on purpose. Isn?t there even a warning on the carton and every menu in the country? You shouldn?t drink downstream from the herd, play in the street, or eat unwashed greens. Proper food preparation is everyone?s responsibility. It will be a shame if eggs disappear from anyone?s diet.
