Abortion Death Investigation Leads to Gruesome Discovery - Frozen Fetus Collection
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) Authorities investigating a doctor's office because of allegations a woman died after an abortion were shocked to find over two dozen frozen fetuses, Philadelphia's KYW reported.
Dr. Kermit Gosnell's office was raided for the second time in four days Monday, by city, state and federal officials. Fetuses were said to be found frozen in a freezer, with parts of other fetuses on display in jars, according to KYW. Some of the fetuses may date back more than 30 years.
The search started after a patient of Dr. Gosnell reportedly died Nov. 20, 2009, following an abortion.
According to the Pennsylvania Board of Medicine, Dr. Gosnell had an unlicensed staff member treating patients, who, the state claims, administered Demerol, Promethazine and Diazepam to an abortion patient. After Dr. Gosnell arrived, the patient was reportedly given more medication, the abortion was performed, and the woman then experienced an arrhythmia and died.
One of the doctor's patients told KYW that Gosnell is a "very good doctor... I've known him for years."
The State Health Board has temporarily shut down the doctor's office. The FBI is investigating. No charges have been filed.
